I wonder what is diarrhea, which is one of the diseases that mothers fear?
When should we worry?
In what cases should we go to a doctor or hospital?
Poop sample in every case of diarrhea. , should we have a blood test?
What should we eat and drink when we have diarrhea? What should we not give?
What causes diarrhea? Do diarrhea necessarily require amoeba medication or antibiotics? Can diarrhea be cured without medication?
What is diarrhea?: Diarrhea is a disease that we can encounter throughout the year, more prominently in the summer months and sometimes due to the effects of some viruses specific to the winter months. . I will not define the disease as if one poops more than this number of times a day, it is diarrhea; Because each child's defecation behavior and number-consistency characteristics are different. You, the mother, as the person who cares for your child, know his/her defecation characteristics best. The characteristics of the diarrhea of children who poop every few days and have very hard stools may not be the same as children who have thick stools every day. For this reason, when defining diarrhea; We can use the concepts of our child having a looser consistency or watery appearance than his usual defecation, and having more stools than our child's usual defecation frequency.
When should we be worried?: Diarrhea is often not due to the cause. However, it worries us due to the clinical appearance of the patient. For example, while a child who has diarrhea 10 times but is not dehydrated, does not vomit what he eats or drinks, is willing to eat and has not reduced his daily energy, does not worry us; A dehydrated child who has had diarrhea 2-3 times, has no desire to eat or drink, or vomits up every supplement he takes orally and does not want to lift his head from the pillow may excite us. This means that diarrhea alone is not a problem, the child's illness is important to us. If children completely refuse to eat, refuse to drink, constantly vomit, have a very high fever, cannot give oral medication, are dehydrated, have bloody diarrhea, have repeated vomiting by squirting, have increasing abdominal pain, and have progressive weight loss, do not hesitate to consult or visit your doctor. .
In which cases a doctor-hospital visit is required?: As mentioned above, In these cases, a doctor's opinion is absolutely necessary. In addition, in these cases, poop (microbial appearance, rota antigen, occult blood, amoeba search, culture for bacteria, etc.), urine and blood tests can also be given by your doctor in the hospital and laboratory after examination, if deemed necessary. In addition, patients who cannot take fluids orally or who constantly vomit without digesting the fluid they take may require hospitalization, even for a short time, to administer intravenous fluid therapy. Diarrhea is not a disease that usually gets better suddenly; Defecation returns to normal within a few days to 1-2 weeks. If the duration of diarrhea exceeds 2 weeks, then I recommend you to consult a doctor.
Should we have an examination every time there is diarrhea?:When the patient's clinic requires a visit to the doctor, the history of the disease is evaluated together with the examination findings and, if necessary. Tests such as stool (, blood, urine) may be requested. If you have a mild illness that can be spent at home, no analysis will be given unless your doctor deems it necessary.
What should we eat and drink when we have diarrhea? What should we not give?: To prevent diarrhea and defecation It is a condition where the defecation is fast and frequent, then it is appropriate to give foods that will reduce the speed of defecation and constipate (potatoes, applesauce, bananas, rice, peaches, etc.) Foods that will increase the speed of the intestines even more (oily foods, sugary foods such as fruit juices, apricots-pears). -Fibrous foods such as plums, corn, peas and lentils) should not be fed for a while. Fermented and probiotic dairy products such as ayran, yoghurt and kefir should also be preferred due to their properties that support healing during the diarrhea period.
Diarrhea. For what reason? Do diarrhea necessarily require amoeba medication or antibiotics? Can diarrhea get better without medication?
There may be many causes of diarrhea and their treatments vary depending on these reasons. If we examine it under the headings:
- Infections: * Rotavirus, Adenovirus, …other viruses,
* Bacteria such as E.Coli, Salmonella, Shigella,
* Amoeba, Giardia etc. parasites,
- Food intolerance and sensitivity (such as lactose intolerance, sensitivity to dyes, etc.)
- Food allergy (especially cow's milk allergy, as well as bloody-mucusy stools to allergic food systemic reactions such as facial-body rash, diaper rash, runny nose, etc. may also be accompanied by discomfort)
- Food poisoning (vomiting, weakness and even fever may accompany diarrhea, associated with toxins or microbes in spoiled food)
As seen above, even when we classify it in the simplest way, diarrhea can be very different from each other, which means that their treatments will be very different from each other. Treatment will be given for the cause and recovery will be expected, and recovery time will vary depending on the cause and the child. We do not need to use antibiotics, except for diarrhea caused by bacteria (which we do not give often). We do not need to use parasite medications except for diarrhea in which parasites such as amoeba are indicated. As a result, we do not actually need these two medications very much.
In non-severe cases, medication use (antibiotics, probiotics, oral fluid therapy solutions, intravenous fluid applications such as serum, zinc syrups, etc.) is often not required. Contact your doctor and create your appropriate treatment program after determining the severity of the disease and the need for examination-tests.
I wish you safe and healthy days.
