Architecture in Psychological Health Practices in the Ottoman Period

In the Ottoman period, architecture, nature, aroma therapy, healthy nutrition and music were used in psychological health practices. These lead to emotional states that nourish and relax the human spirit, get them out of the distressed situation they are in, even a little bit, make them experience different emotions, rejuvenate memories, and keep the past and the future alive.

and/ Despite his forty splits, he could not comprehend even a single one/ While thousands of suns were burning in my heart/ I could not decipher the meaning of a single particle…”

This stanza is one of the first names that come to mind when “scientists of the Islamic world” are mentioned, Avicenna. It belongs to. Avicenna, known in Europe as "Avicenna", is a figure of great importance in the history of science. When we look at his life, we cannot say "He has done studies in a single field" or "His interest is only in the field of medicine". We come across a person who has a multi-faceted research and knowledge. He also made important studies in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, philosophy, poetry and music. His versatile feature and creative mind made him one of the most important geniuses of history. So, how was the childhood of this scientist? Has he always pursued research and knowledge?

Ibn Sina also loved the game like every child. One day, while playing a game, an old man said, “You are very smart, you will be a scholar in the future; is the game good for you? Study your lessons”. Little Ibn Sina gives the following answer: “Every age has a certain state. Play is also the match of childhood. Every age should be given its due.”

This answer she gave with the intelligence of a child always remains valid. Because we can only be included in the world of children through play. the game is their window to the world. Children learn to share, generate ideas, problem solving skills and communication through play. Play is the child's work. The Prophet also said, "Play with your children until they are seven years old." Maybe adults It may seem insignificant for us, but play is a good teacher.

Play has a great place in our conversations with children. In the therapy room, we listen to adults and ask questions. But our communication tool with children is “play”. Thanks to the game, we open the door to their world. We are trying to understand the source of the problem, if any.

“What did Ibn Sina do and how did he work until he became “Avicenna?” Of course, we cannot fit it into this article. His effort, effort and knowledge goes beyond these lines. I will try to put this into writing as much as possible to set an example and light…

Ibn Sina says that while he was studying, although he had a tireless nature, he acquired all the knowledge of the period with personal effort, and explains his working method as follows: While explaining that he is working, he says,) “When I was surprised by an issue, I used to go to the mosque, pray and beg Allah. Then what was closed to me would open up, and the difficulties would become easier. I used to read and write at night in the light of a lamp at my house. When I fell asleep or felt a weakness in myself, I would drink something to gain strength, and then I would start reading again. Even if I fell asleep, I would still think about it. So much so that many issues have been solved for me during sleep.”

He says that he uses observation and experimentation methods in the field of medicine: “I was completing what I learned with observations on patients. I benefited more from experimentation and observation than from reading books.”

Having the ability to observe and blending it with knowledge will give accurate results. Sometimes one can get into a corner and learn about a community just by observing them. For example, when we apply a personality test, we do not make a decision based on the test result alone. We add the test information, the observations and the information we obtained during the interview, and we draw a conclusion.

Undoubtedly, Ibn Sina's great reputation is primarily due to his being a successful doctor. His teacher is a doctor named “Kuşyar”. He improved himself thanks to the medical books he read alongside him. By the age of 18, he had become quite knowledgeable in the field of classical medicine. Avicenna, who started medicine at a young age, cured Noah Ibn Mansur from the Samani Dynasty. Thus, he had the right to use the palace library. Here, he had the opportunity to learn the teachings of different disciplines. This work, which has been influential in medical schools in Asia and Europe for nearly six centuries, consists of 5 volumes and includes traditional medicine information of China, India and Egypt. Another important work of Avicenna written in the field of medicine is the Treatise on Heart Medicines. This work is a monographic work written on heart diseases, which also includes pharmacy. It is interesting that Ibn Sina also worked as a psychiatrist, starting with the general theories about the heart and the general characteristics of the drugs, then the heart drugs were discussed and which drug should be used for which heart patients in alphabetical order. He comes across as someone who strives for research and self-improvement in every field, who is tireless, and who seeks answers to questions even in his sleep. When we look at his researches in the field of mental health, according to him, there are two elements that make up the human being: “Spirit and body”… These two elements also have their own specific diseases. For example, "melancholy" is a subject that needs to be examined about the soul, and Avicenna makes evaluations about it. should live in places where a mild climate prevails, ventilate their dwelling frequently, and perfumes should be applied to the place where they sleep and their surroundings. While walking and sitting, he should always use pleasant smells, eat delicious and light meals made of good ingredients, strengthen his body with foods suitable for his temperament, take a short bath before eating, pour warm water on his head. The patient should avoid excessive sweating, legumes, dry meat, excessively salty, spicy, acidic, sour foods and beverages.”

Architecture, nature, aroma therapy, healthy nutrition and music were also used in psychological health practices in the Ottoman period. These are things that nourish and comfort the human spirit, When we look at Ibn Sina's thoughts on education (taking into account the time he lived), it is as follows: He conveys information:

“The aim of education is to reach happiness in this world and in the hereafter by perfecting one's abilities and perfecting himself. In this process, a person who knows himself also knows his Lord. The education of the child is primarily the duty of the family. Play and toys are important in the development of the child. Mind, soul and body training takes place more easily and quickly in this way. The first basic education of the child should be moral education for the purpose of developing feelings, thoughts and behavior. For this, it must be kept away from bad environments and environments and grown in a good environment and environment. When the child is six years old, he should be started in school. There should be reward and praise in education, punishment should be considered as a last resort; it should also be considered as an educational element. While educating and teaching, one should go from easy to difficult, from simple to complex. While teaching something to the child, reinforcing it with stories are the elements that make learning easier. It is not pedagogically correct for rich children to grow up by taking private lessons. They should be brought up together in the same environment with their friends. In vocational and art education, every child should be raised in areas suitable for his/her own abilities and wishes. The field of the educator as a professional is a field of specialization that requires certain characteristics. Persons whose natural ability and capacity are not suitable should not be educators.” (Idea)

Ibn Sina has left us and those who come after us with valuable information that will not be lost or diminished no matter how many years have passed.
