In our study conducted under the leadership of my colleague Serhat Güler, we investigated the frequency of sleep problems in children with autism and their relationship with vitamin D levels. The relationship between vitamin D deficiency and sleep problems has been previously reported in other cases.
In our study, 68% of children with autism had low vitamin D levels, and 78% had low vitamin D levels. We detected sleep problems in > children.
Sleep problems were more evident in children with low vitamin D levels before treatment.
After giving adequate vitamin D treatment to the children, we observed a significant decrease in sleep problems.
Vitamin D supplementation seems to be a cheap and harmless treatment option for autistic children with sleep problems.
