If we asked everyone, we would all make similar definitions. Postponing means a job, responsibility, task, etc. that we will do. It is the state of not doing situations or delaying doing them.
People usually postpone their work or do not do it. When you ask the person why you didn't do it or why you were so late to do it, I couldn't find the time, I was going to do it but something else came in between, I forgot, I didn't have money. They may make various excuses such as, "I didn't have time."
So why do they do this?
-
For example, let's imagine that a university student has a final period and an exam in 1 week, but the student does not care about the exam until the last night, and when the last night comes, the lesson He sits down and prepares for the next day's exam until the morning. This student wanted to fit all his work into 8-10 hours, instead of a whole week.
-
Another example is that person A uses alcohol, he knows the harm alcohol will do to him and he always says he will quit, but he just can't quit.
-
To give another example, we all say from time to time that we will start a diet, but we cannot start, let's eat this, a new place has opened there. We postpone it with excuses like "let's go and start like that".
When we look at all 3 examples, do we see the common feature? We always want to, but other things get in the way, so we don't or can't do what we need to do. Because what we really want is not the action but the result of the action.
We want to stop drinking alcohol, but we do not want to give up the pleasure we get from alcohol. We want to start a diet, but we do not want to give up the pleasure we get from the foods we love. For these reasons, we always postpone quitting.
So why does the friend who left the exam until the last minute study for the exam at the last minute? Because if he does not study for the exam, he will probably not pass the exam and will fail the exam. This creates fear in him, so he wants to study for the exam even if it is the last night. So, we can say for this friend that being afraid gave him motivation and he did the task he had to do.
In fact, he was postponing something. We postpone it in order not to feel the fear and anxiety it leaves us with. We cannot bear that tension, we do not want to endure it, and when we postpone it, we experience short-term relief. Anyway, we say we'll deal with it later and we postpone it.
There may be another reason why we want to postpone: Is it easier to do something that will achieve results in the long term or to start doing something easier? We will start a diet, but maybe losing weight is a result we will get in the long term, but if we postpone it, we will reach the result immediately and leave out that feeling of discomfort.
If we sum everything up, we will get a result immediately. We need 3 things to do the task;
-
Energy to start the job
-
Do the job itself
p> -
The results of the work
How will we do it?
We will set a time for a job we will do (I will go on Monday, August 3rd).
We will use negative behavior for our excuses (If I postpone, I will not buy what I like).
If you have a hard time doing something alone, you will be with me. You can also do activities with someone to accompany you. You can turn activities that seem boring to you into more enjoyable activities for yourself. For example, if doing sports overwhelms you or if you cannot do it, you can take a friend with you and go to sports, thus we add a social aspect to the sports event.
Also, it should not be forgotten that we will get the feeling of "I did my responsibility" and "I did my responsibility" at the end of every task, every job, every activity we do. Relaxation will provide us with motivation for the next job we will do.
We can give ourselves a reward at the end of everything we do and reinforce not to procrastinate, for example, there is a place we need to go to, but you never go, let's say you went at the end of the job you did. Drinking coffee somewhere, meeting with your friends, or doing activities you enjoy alone will provide motivation for your next job.
If doing a job is difficult for you, you can divide your work into 2-3 steps, provided that you do not divide it too much.
For the student example above, do not leave it until the last night, but 2-3 days later. It will be easier to prepare for the exam in advance, but when we divide the work we do into many parts, we will see that we will postpone the exam again.
The last thing we will do is etc. If it requires attention, you can do it when you feel most vigorous, or you can use tools that motivate you. If attention is required, you can do it with coffee etc. to be more vigorous, or if you are going to do sports, do it with your favorite music.
