People with generalized anxiety disorder constantly worry at a level that is inappropriate for the situation they are in. People with generalized anxiety disorder think that the worst outcome will happen to them in every situation, they think that they are losing control of life, they draw disaster scenarios in their minds and there is no good possibility in those scenarios. In this way, the person who lives with anxiety almost every day has difficulty in doing his daily work or cannot perform as expected.
Most of the time, the person is aware that these concerns are excessive, but cannot control the situation. Most of the time, they experience anxiety, fear, distress, restlessness throughout the day, constantly have negative thoughts in their minds, have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, and wake up frequently. Generalized Anxiety Disorder may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as pain for no reason, feeling weak, head-neck-back pain, tremors, feeling dizzy, and hot flashes.
How Does Generalized Anxiety Disorder Develop?
Common. Anxiety disorders usually begin in childhood or adolescence and develop slowly and insidiously. In adulthood, a person may think that this situation is a personality structure and is a normal situation. They usually do not realize the negative thoughts most of the time and usually consult non-psychiatric doctors for back, neck, headaches, hot flashes, sweating and fatigue. In the examinations, no physical cause is detected for the complaints they experience. People with generalized anxiety disorder are described as anxious by those around them.
Can Generalized Anxiety Disorder Be Treated?
Generalized anxiety disorder is a treatable brain disease. The first thing that people with such complaints should do is to see a psychiatrist and, after the diagnosis is made, treatment should be started with the necessary medication and/or psychotherapy methods. Antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs are generally used in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. There is no risk of addiction to antidepressant drugs used in treatment.
Very serious side effects of antidepressant drugs are not observed, usually in the initial period of treatment, which can last for a few days (side effects are not observed in every person). Mild side effects may occur with antidepressant drugs, as with all other medications. Urban legends about antidepressants should not be believed. Because if such psychological diseases are not treated, the person may experience problems for many years.
