Being Mindful in Shopping

After reading the title of the article, I am aware that many people are very curious about the rest of the article. Nowadays, while there are discounts that are gracing our eyes every moment we turn our heads, especially as Black Friday approaches, even though we have survived the November discounts, I wanted to share with you an article about being mindful in shopping against this danger.

What is Mindfulness?

Lately, the word mindfulness and its techniques are on the lips of many people. So, if we start by asking what is this thing we call mindfulness, in its simplest definition, it means "present moment". In other words, it means noticing what is happening around you and within yourself as much as possible. It means seeing the thoughts passing through your mind, perceiving the emotions you experience and the sensations in your body as they are, and being able to stay with them without reacting because you do not name or judge the events as you normally do.

Perhaps, "So how will this situation benefit us in shopping?" I can almost hear you say. But did you know that approximately 60% of the average consumer's decisions when purchasing products are instinctive and instantaneous? Or that they keep half of what they buy for many years but do not use it?

Recently, especially considering the difficult quarantine period we have been going through due to the pandemic, buying things through online shopping has become a very easy and effortless activity for consumers. When you are not feeling well, upset about something or angry, you can quickly and easily order by browsing the application or website of your favorite brand. Moreover, they come to your door in a very short time. Or, while browsing Instagram, you may find yourself shopping in the same way when you receive an e-mail.

Using Mindfulness Techniques While Shopping

So, how do we use the mindfulness techniques we mentioned at the beginning while shopping?

First of all, you must decide “which one you need and which one you want”. While shopping, you should be aware of yourself, your breathing, your current mood, your physical Be aware of your sensations. This way, you will be aware of what you really need and what you instinctively turn to.

Make sure to make a shopping list beforehand. Remember what you are shopping for and be sure to stick to it.

Think when buying something and touch what you will buy. “How much will you use it, what kind of fabric is it, how useful will it be?” Try to be there at that moment by trying to answer questions such as.

Most importantly, try to be fully aware of that moment and process as much as possible, which is the purpose of mindfulness. If you've had a bad day or are in a rush, give yourself 10 minutes to stop before you start shopping. Meanwhile, notice your breathing and your surroundings.

When shopping online, do not save your credit card information on shopping sites and applications. Unfortunately, your registered credit card makes your job much easier when shopping, and it also speeds up the purchasing process. However, finding your card first and then entering your information will save you time before purchasing, making it easier for you to notice the moment.
