Female Circumcision: Genital Mutilation of Women

Female circumcision or female genital mutilation (FGM) is the partial or complete removal of female reproductive organs for non-medical reasons. This ritual practice is seen in some countries or some communities within countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In countries where national statistics are available, it is seen that most girls are subjected to this practice by the age of five. Application types vary by country or ethnic group. Applications include removal of the prepuce and clitoral glans; removal of inner lips; These procedures are various, such as removing the inner and outer lips and covering the vulva. In this last practice, called infibulation, a small hole is left for urine and menstrual discharge to come out, and the vagina is opened for sexual intercourse and birth.

Although the practice has no known health benefits; It causes serious problems such as recurrent infections, difficulty in urination and menstrual flow, chronic pain, cyst formation, inability to become pregnant, complications encountered during child birth, and bleeding leading to death. It has profound effects on women and girls, both physically and psychologically.

Despite international efforts since the 1970s, these laws have not been fully implemented.

It is most implemented in Djibouti, Somalia. Countries such as , Eritrea are places where Type I and II type cutting is common.

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Circumcision (February 6) is an awareness day accepted to draw attention to the harms of female circumcision.
