Does Excess Weight Cause Infertility?

Gynecology, Obstetrics and In Vitro Fertilization Specialist Op. Dr. Seval Taşdemir stated that the problem of excess weight (obesity) may have negative effects on fertility and even lead to infertility.

The number of overweight people is increasing both in the world and in our country. 21% of men and 42% of women in our country are considered overweight. Excess weight causes infertility problems as well as other health problems. Menstrual irregularity and ovulation problems seen in overweight women significantly reduce the chance of getting pregnant and lead to infertility in the future. Like being overweight, being underweight is also among the factors that reduce the chance of pregnancy. In women, 66% of the estrogen hormone is produced in fat cells. Increase or decrease in estrogen levels negatively affects pregnancy. Having both couples at ideal weight significantly increases the possibility of pregnancy.

The effect of excess weight on women

A large number of fat cells in women disrupts the estrogen balance. High estrogen level is considered one of the factors that prevent ovulation. The metabolic disorder that occurs due to high body mass index has a significant impact on the development of the egg. The chance of natural pregnancy is very low in women with ovulation disorders. The ideal body mass index for pregnancy is between 21 and 29. Having a lower or higher body mass index directly affects the chance of getting pregnant. According to research, it has been observed that in 60% of overweight women who lost 5% of their weight, the menstrual irregularity problem disappeared and their periods became regular again.

The effect of excess weight on men

Overweight is extremely important not only in women but also in men. The sperm quality of overweight men decreases significantly. In men, as in women, the estrogen hormone is produced in fat tissue. However, this production is much less compared to women. In men with more fat tissue, the ratio of testosterone to estrogen increases even more. Men who are overweight have more hormonal disruptions than men of ideal weight. clicks are seen. As the testosterone level decreases, sperm quality also decreases. In men, falling to the ideal weight ensures that sperm quality increases again. Body weight being less than normal and sudden excessive weight loss reduce sperm count and sperm motility. Therefore, the ideal thing is not to lose excessive weight suddenly, but to lose weight by eating regularly under the supervision of a doctor.
