The Psychology of Procrastination
People procrastinate from time to time in order of importance. The situation that requires clinical intervention here is that the person postpones what he should do even though he knows that the result will be negative. Underlying procrastination is the inability to manage negative moods and emotions. The human mind is programmed to meet short-term needs first, not long-term needs. In other words, postponing the job in order to eliminate the negative mood experienced before doing the work will be the first option for our mind. Postponing the stressful work for a while and turning to a more enjoyable subject for the person has a short-term relaxing effect. Our brain is constantly looking for rewards that will give it pleasure. For this reason, people continue to repeat the same behavior unless there is a method to break this cycle about procrastination. As the work to be done continues to exist, it emerges as stress, anxiety, self-blame and brings with it intense emotions and negative cognitive processes such as negatively affecting self-esteem.
