CHILD HEALTH AND DISEASES EXPERT DR. ZEYNEL AbidİN TAŞBAŞ: “DIARRHEA CAUSES SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN, EVEN DEATH, DEPENDS ON SUDDEN LOSS OF WATER AND SALT.” IT'S DEADLY TOO MAYBE”
Diarrhea, which increases in the summer, is shown as one of the most common health problems faced by children. Stating that diarrhea causes serious problems in children, even leading to death, experts give serious warnings for families to pay attention to their children's complaints.;
Medicana Konya Hospital Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Zeynel Abidin Taşbaş stated that diarrhea is more common in children in the summer months than in other seasons and said, “Infections transmitted through food are generally known as gastroenteritis and cause complaints of diarrhea and vomiting. For this reason, diarrhea problems are more common in summer compared to other seasons. For babies older than three months, passing watery and abundant stools more than 3-5 times a day is diarrhea. For babies under three months, it is defined as diarrhea with more than 10-12 stools a day, abundant in quantity, and watery poop that will overflow from the diaper. In babies who use diapers, the diaper can absorb the water from the poop. For this reason, families may not be able to predict how watery the poop is. In such a case, if the child poops more frequently than usual, one after the other, his diaper is heavier than usual, this can be considered as diarrhea. "The presence of blood and mucus in the poop, the child's fever, and the accompanying vomiting are indicators of the urgency of the situation," he said. Stating that bacterial infections generally occur with complaints of fever, vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain, Taşbaş said, “The fever in the body can sometimes exceed 39 degrees. The main danger for children during this period is diarrhea and vomiting. Vomiting along with diarrhea causes serious fluid loss in the body. "For this reason, it is very important for families to pay attention to the severity of diarrhea and vomiting in their children," he said.
"DIARRHEA CAN EVEN CAUSE DEATH IN CHILDREN." WHY IT CAUSES ANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS DEPENDS ON THE SUDDEN LOSS OF WATER AND SALT"
Doctor Zeynel Abidin Taşbaş stated that the reason why diarrhea causes serious problems, even death, in children is due to the sudden loss of water and salt and said: "The body of children is more prone to water loss than adults. They can tolerate water less well and are more sensitive to water than adults. For this reason, children are much more affected by water loss than adults, and if thirst is not met, it can cause serious health problems." IT MAY BE FATAL”
Underlining that diarrhea can be fatal in young children, Taşbaş continued his words as follows: “Diarrhea in young children causes large water losses, especially in the presence of vomiting, and can be fatal if not enough water is given. Therefore, children with vomiting should be given plenty of water. Additionally, liquids such as lean soup, pudding prepared with rice water and diluted milk, buttermilk, and apple juice can be given to prevent dehydration and at the same time to meet the calorie needs. Babies should be given breast milk whenever possible. Breast milk is an important source of nutrients that protects against diarrhea. Babies who are breastfed when sick recover faster. Breastfeeding is increased in babies under six months of age who have not yet started complementary feeding. If the baby takes it, warm boiled water can be given intermittently." The child with diarrhea should be given whatever he wants. Fatty and sugary foods should not be given as this will cause loss of appetite. "Mashed potatoes, yoghurt, cheese and rice porridge, which are generally known to the public, are the right foods, but in addition to these, the foods your body wants should also be given so that it can get the energy it needs," he explained.
