When people think of hernia, many types of hernia come to mind. One of the most common misapplications to general surgery clinics is herniated discs. General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. stated that apart from that, stomach hernias, umbilical hernias and incisional hernias are also the area of interest of general surgery. Dr. Hüseyin Kadıoğlu gave information about inguinal hernias.
Inguinal Hernias Are Frequently Seen in Men
Inguinal hernias are hernias that are frequently seen in men and are often seen on the left side. Dr. Kadıoğlu, “The most common finding of these hernias is swelling in the groin. These swellings often occur with straining, walking for a long time, standing for a long time, and similar activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure. Again, patients with prostate complaints and patients with COPD (Lung disease) are in the risk group. "Usually, when there is no swelling, the patient does not have pain, but when the swelling occurs, the patient has pain," he said. Stating that it is the type, Dr. Kadıoğlu continued his words as follows: “In one of these types, there is a weakness of the muscles that directly form the groin wall, while in the other, there is a situation where the intra-abdominal organs protrude through the canal we call the inguinal canal. The type of hernia does not prevent the treatment method. The ideal and gold standard treatment for both types is patches. These patches do not just serve as mechanical barriers. At the same time, the pores on the patch are filled with a tissue called fibrosis tissue over time and support the tissue.”
Patients Can Be Discharged on the Same Day in Hernia Surgeries
Dr. Kadıoğlu, “Hernia surgeries can be performed open and closed. Recurrence rates in surgeries performed with a patch, regardless of open or closed, are below 1%. Patients are usually hospitalized on the day of surgery. The surgery can be performed by numbing only the waist or with general anesthesia. Only in closed surgeries, anesthesia from the waist down is not sufficient and the patient must sleep. The same procedure is performed in both open or closed surgeries and the muscle The area around the vaginal canal and the muscles in the groin are supported by a patch. Patients can be discharged on the first day after surgery or on the same day if the surgery was performed early. It is recommended that patients rest for 7-10 days after discharge. "While patients who do heavy sports are allowed after the 6th week, simple training can be started on the 14th day," he said.
