Our neck!

Head - Body connection

Increasing visual field with neck movements
Our cervical spine and the muscle and connective tissues that support it are a region that can move in multiple directions, apart from carrying a heavy organ such as the head and protecting the most important part of the spinal cord. Twenty percent of this carrying feature is performed by the spine, and eighty percent by muscles and connective tissue. In this regard, in addition to a healthy spine structure, a healthy, strong muscle structure is also necessary. The mobility of our neck is especially related to head movements and the sense of vision. Our neck may be subject to serious problems in daily life. Most people's complaints are actually the result of inappropriate neck movements in daily life. Our neck is a "C" shaped structure with the opening we call "Lordoz" facing backwards. While this curvature may straighten with minor traumas in daily life, it may also become a straight structure in older ages due to degenerative changes of the spine, and may even bend forward and take a kyphosis-hunchbacked form. This may cause neck pain. We use devices such as phones, tablets, portable or desktop computers extensively in our daily lives. Improper body posture while using them causes some problems. Especially our neck, which carries our head and contains the nerve roots that help us control our arms as well as the spinal cord, can be negatively affected due to incorrect posture of the head and neck and making it a habit. As the degree of head bending forward increases, the load carried by our neck also increases relatively. While our neck carries a weight of 4.5 - 5.5 kg when we are facing forward (0 degrees), when we bend forward at 45 degrees, it carries a heavy load of 20 kg. When using devices such as phones and computers, it is very important to hold their screens towards our face. We call lordosis in our cervical spine. As the curvature facing backwards decreases, the neck structure straightens and gradually bends forward and becomes hunched, causing pressure, tension and rapid aging on the cervical vertebrae of people, causing spondylosis - degeneration. Normally, in humans, the line drawn downwards from the outer ear hole in the plumb line passes through the middle of the shoulder. In people whose head moves forward, this line shifts to the front of the shoulder. Patients may especially experience chronic headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, and back pain. As a result, correcting daily posture disorders and problems that can be overcome with physical education require medical treatment.
Suggestions for a healthy neck:
-
Poor posture is very important.
-
The pillow used while sleeping should be at an appropriate height, and the pillow should be lowered below the shoulders so that the head and shoulders are on the same plane. A high pillow is inconvenient.
-
Computer, tablet and phone screens should be used facing our face.
-
With regular exercises, neck muscles can be strengthened. The carrying capacity of the neck muscles can be strengthened by strengthening them.
-
Neck structure and shoulder structure should be considered together. Because; Carrying a bag on the shoulder, carrying a heavy load in the hand, talking for a long time with the phone squeezed between the shoulder and ear can damage the neck - shoulder structure.
What can deterioration of the neck structure lead to?
-
Disalignment, flattening and forward hump in the cervical vertebrae
-
Aging, degeneration, spondylosis, calcification in the cervical vertebrae
-
Changes and degeneration in the discs located between the cervical vertebrae
-
Damage, problems, limitation of movement in the neck - shoulder muscles
-
Nerve compression and neurological deterioration after this process
