What is Transcranial Magnetic stimulation (TMS) or Brain Stimulation (TMS) Treatment?

The brain is an organ that works with electrical impulses emitted by neurons. In some cases or diseases, there are disturbances in electrical stimulation in different parts of the brain. Diseases are treated by intervening outside these disorders with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or stimulation (TMS).

What is the mechanism of action of TMS and how is it applied?

TMS is applied 2-3 cm above the skull with the help of a coil. It activates the electric current in the cerebral cortex with the magnetic field effect it creates and thus depolarizes the neurons. TMS has different effects when applied at different frequencies. High frequency TMS causes excitation in the area where it is applied, while low frequency TMS causes inhibition (slowing down). In repetitive TMS, magnetic pulses come in a rapid series. The location, intensity and time interval of stimulation are adjusted in different diseases.

Where is TMS used?

TMS can be used in many different psychiatric and neurological diseases.

Studies conducted on

major depression patients have shown the effectiveness of TMS applied at high frequency to the left prefrontal cortex in the treatment of depression. TMS has FDA (American Food and Drug Administration) approval for the treatment of depression.

It is used in many psychiatric disorders other than depression. It is very effective in treating anxiety disorders, as well as hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders. It can be used safely in childhood because it has no side effects.

It has been found to be very effective in neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, essential tremor and tinnitus and is widely used.

Again, in studies conducted and published in 2016 It has been reported that it can be effective in suppressing the feeling of hunger and reducing food intake in cases of obesitydisorders.

TMS IN PREGNANCY

15% of mothers suffer from it during pregnancy and in the early postpartum period. Depression may be seen in some of them. Treatment becomes difficult, especially during pregnancy, because the medications given for depression are harmful to the baby. mother's b In addition to motivational interviews and cognitive behavioral studies, which are determined according to the severity of symptoms, TMS applied as somatic therapy can help patients during pregnancy and puerperium.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Patients do not feel any pain during TMS application. Current safety protocols adjust the amount of stimulation relative to the individual's motor threshold.
