Researchers stated that it has rapidly surpassed smoking as the number one killer of obesity. In fact, obesity has become such a problem that many experts say that obesity turns all the advantages of the latest advances in medicine into a disadvantage.
According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) data in 2000 435,000 people died from smoking, the biggest cause of death. And 18.1% of everyone who died in 2000 died from a smoking-related disease.
The number of deaths from obesity was 400,000 people. 129.6 million Americans are overweight or obese, 64% of the population. If obesity continues to rise, by 2020, 20% of healthcare expenditures will be on obesity-related diseases and disorders.
People of the whole world must understand that fatness and obesity are literally killing us. Poor eating habits and inactivity are on the verge of surpassing tobacco use as the leading causes of preventable death.
All people should be motivated to take action to protect their health. We need to fight obesity as aggressively as we fight against smoking and tobacco.
