What is Body Mass Index? How is it calculated?

Whether people are obese or not should be determined according to an objective criterion. Otherwise, someone who is obese for one person may not be considered obese for another person. As there are many criteria for this, the most frequently used one is the body mass index (BMI, which is the initials of the words).

How to Calculate Body Mass Index?

Height weight ratio is taken as basis in calculation of body mass index. To calculate the body mass index; The person's body weight (kg) is divided by the square of the person's height.
For example; Let's calculate the BMI of a person who weighs 95 kilograms and is 1.55 m tall: 90/1.552 ie 90/2.4025 = 37.4
This person's BMI: 37.4 and is considered obese.

Body Mass Index How Much Should It Be?

The meaning of body mass index is as follows:
normal if BMI is between 18 and <25, overweight if BMI is between 25 and <30, obese if BMI is 30 or higher, severely obese if BMI is 35 or more
In our country, the obesity rate in the society is over 30%, and the severe obesity rate is around 17%. Being overweight increases the risk of some diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, lipid metabolism disorders, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, cancer, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In order to prevent this, diet, medical treatment and lifestyle changes are recommended, but individuals may not always be successful in losing weight.

Body Mass Index for Age

Body ash index only considers kilograms and height values. However, different factors such as body composition, fat distribution, age, gender and race also play a role in determining a person's body type. There is not yet an internationally common calculation system that includes all these.
Body mass index (BMI) is generally used in this regard, as it will give an objective idea, although it does not show it exactly. In addition to these measurements, waist width can also be calculated, providing additional information about whether the person is obese or not.

Waist Width

When it is > 102 cm in men and > 88 cm in women, it is considered as high risk. The waist circumference evaluation also differs between men and women, and varies according to age and race.
