Our hands also age

The bad effects of aging are not only seen in our eyes and hearts. Our hands, with which we eat, earn our living, love our children, in short, continue our daily lives and make us human, also succumb to the effects of time. We are not just talking about aging, which occurs in the skin and is referred to as the "Madonna hand" in the press, such as wrinkling of the skin, more visible veins and the appearance of bones, but age-related problems that negatively affect our lives occur in all the tissues that make up our hands.

Let's start with the bones. : While women, especially, have the nightmare of osteoporosis after menopause, the most common bone problem in the hands is osteoarthritis, commonly known as calcification. Dislocation occurs where the thumb meets the wrist due to pain, limitation of movement and joint deformation.

Diabetes, liver dysfunction and alcohol consumption beyond social drinking cause a connective tissue problem called "Viking disease" in aging men. The disease, whose medical name is "Dupuytren's contracture", is called Viking disease because it is seen mostly in Scandinavian men. It causes complaints such as folding of the fingers towards the palm and inability to open the fingers, especially in the ring and little fingers. Finger bending beyond a certain level affects daily tasks, as well as sweat and water accumulating in the fold, which paves the way for fungal infections and bad odors in the hand.

We used to call it a disease of women who are passionate about cleanliness, it was a disease of calloused, stuffy hands, "nerve compression in the wrist", but now we see it in women who misuse the computer mouse; edema that occurs with hormonal changes with age and excess weight gained trigger this condition.

Tendons, which are extensions of our muscles, also succumb to time and begin to get stuck in the tunnels they pass through every day; It's easy to say, while moving in the same tunnel millions of times for years, over time it starts to get stuck and your fingers start to click.

As our joints get older, not only pain occurs; Sometimes they leak the fluid inside and form lumps that appear just under the skin with small bubbles, mostly on our wrists, called "ganglion cysts". Over Unfortunately, the egg whites applied and the coins used do not work.

Nails that have been polished for years and have not received air begin to wear out, thicken, and form swelling at the base of the nail over time. The simplest infection on the hand scares us with pain because it is an area dense with nerve endings. The slightest redness at the base of the nail, an abscess formation that appears white, and grooves in the nail should warn us and prompt us to consult a doctor.
