Inguinal and abdominal hernias are very common diseases. One in a hundred people has an inguinal or abdominal wall hernia. However, unless the hernia grows or causes pain, a doctor is not consulted, or sometimes it is not noticed that there is a hernia. However, this common disorder has the possibility of causing serious problems.
The weakest part of the abdominal wall is the groin. In addition, a hernia may develop due to weaknesses in the abdominal wall that are congenital or develop later due to surgery or injury. The intra-abdominal pressure, which is higher than the outside pressure, pushes the intra-abdominal organs outwards from these weak places, and bulging and bulging occurs in the hernia area. This bulging, that is, hernia sac, can cause pain, tightness, a feeling of excess, deformity and difficulty in movement in the patient, making social life difficult. In addition, organs or intra-abdominal fat within the hernial sac may sometimes become trapped and suffocated within the hernial sac. Life-threatening and surgical risk increases in such emergency applications.
Due to the prevalence of hernia, the most commonly performed general surgery in the world and in our country is inguinal hernia repair. Repairing the weakness in the abdominal wall with stitches is no longer an accepted method. It is accepted that the tissues in the hernia area are structurally weak. Therefore, this area needs to be supported with an artificial patch. In open surgery, this patch is placed on the hernia by opening the skin over the hernia. This method is quite successful. In closed, or endoscopic, surgery, the patch is placed behind the abdominal wall. In closed surgery, there are fewer scars and the return to normal life occurs earlier than in open surgery. Additionally, when performed by experienced surgeons, there is less pain and fewer recurrences in closed surgery.
Due to the high recurrence rates in abdominal wall hernias, the patch is now placed under the abdominal wall. This can be done with the open method as well as the closed method. The patches used in the abdomen are made of a special material to prevent them from sticking to the intestines.
If you have a hernia, be sure to consult a general surgeon. You can get rid of your hernia by determining together the treatment method that suits you and without encountering any bad consequences.
