Meralgia Paresthetica

Introduction

The function of the nerves in our body is to convey environmental sensory perceptions (heat, cold, touch, etc.) to the brain and to transform the orders they receive from the brain into movements such as muscle contraction. Nerves pass under, over or around joints, muscles or bones to perform these functions. These nerves travel easily along their pathways in the body.
Pressure situations such as injury or swelling in these nerve pathways may cause pain, paralysis and other dysfunctions as a result of compression of the nerves.

Clinical Findings

There is a burning sensation and pain on the outer side of the thigh. It occurs as a result of the sensory nerve of this region being compressed at a certain point. The name of this nerve in medical language is lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. This disease is known as maralgia parasthetica.

Diagnosis

During the physical examination, your doctor will inquire about any surgeries you have had and hip injuries. The difference in sensory status between the affected leg and the other leg is checked. It is significant that there is tenderness after applying pressure to the burned leg side. Sometimes, MRI or CT may be requested due to suspicion of tumor. In rare cases, an EMG test, which is a nerve conduction study, may be performed.
There are two common reasons that cause pressure on the nerve. One of them is excess weight and wearing tight belts. In this case, your doctor can make recommendations regarding belt and weight.

Treatment

Treatments may cause nerve compression. It may take time for the burning pain to stop, and numbness may continue. The aim is to eliminate the situation that puts pressure on the nerve. Such as losing weight, not using tight belts, wearing comfortable or not tight clothing. In severe cases, your doctor may administer steroids to reduce inflammation. In rare cases, the nerve can be released surgically.
