The Magical World of Psychodrama

A psychological treatment method that we have come across frequently recently: Psychodrama

When we look at its dictionary meaning, we see: 'It is a technique that uses theater in psychological treatment. Developed by Jacob Levy Moreno in the early 20th century.' We asked Expert Psychologist Yeliz Yılmaz about the psychodrama method, which has a magical world in itself. Yılmaz said that he went to a different period in his life with psychodrama, which he met after his Cognitive Behavioral Therapy training. We aim. We portray the situation on our own stage. On this stage, we offer the opportunity to review yesterday, today and tomorrow.' He said.

• Can we get to know you?

Hello, I am Yeliz Yılmaz. I graduated from Atılım University Psychology undergraduate department and Ufuk UniversityGeneral Psychology (Social, Development) master's degree. This is my 6th year in the profession.

• First, can you tell us about your work?

When I finished my undergraduate education, I started working at a private education center. My colleagues know very well that there is no professional staff who does not struggle between theoretical education and practice. However, I went through this process less painfully. I spent my undergraduate education doing voluntary internships in many private institutions. For this reason, when I graduated, I was able to adapt to the field of practice more easily. While working at the special education center, I had the opportunity to work with children and adults diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, autism and Cerebral Palsy. I can say that I learned a lot in this process. And on this occasion, I started my therapy training. First of all, I completed my Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) training. Then I met psychodrama. I can say that I entered a different period in my life with the magic of psychodrama. Currently, I have completed my 3-year psychodrama co-therapist training and continue my work as a co-therapist. In addition, EMDR therapy and Schema therapy trainings I took it and became a practitioner. I provide counseling services to my clients using all the methods I am competent in.

• You mentioned the magical world of psychodrama, what is psychodrama?

Psychodrama was developed by Moreno in the 1920s. is a psychotherapy method based on improvisation and creativity that combines theater techniques with mental health services. Psychodrama is a sharing method based on action, spontaneity and creativity that increases knowing ourselves, looking at ourselves and situations from the outside, and increasing our problem-solving and coping power.

• Is psychodrama a treatment method? In which areas can it be used?

Psychodrama studies are used in every field. It is a treatment method in which people can express their feelings and thoughts in action.

With psychodrama, we approach people's existing problems differently. First of all, we aim to get to the root of the problem, how this situation came to be and how we can change this situation. We portray the situation on our own stage. In this scene, we offer the opportunity to review yesterday, today and tomorrow.

• Why do you choose psychodrama?

I use psychodrama even in my daily life. Although it is currently widely used in group therapy, I also use many of its techniques in my individual therapies. Psychodrama has a magical world. From the moment you enter it, it increases your awareness and directs you to think more accurately and positively. I am in favor of choosing the appropriate method for the appropriate client rather than using a single therapy technique. For this reason, I often use EMDR, CBT and Schema therapy as well as psychodrama.

• So, in which areas do you work mostly?

During my master's degree and after My therapy training continued in the field of clinical and developmental psychology. I often work with children and adults. I also give parent training, communication skills and personal development seminars. I also use psychodrama techniques in these trainings.

• I would like to continue with a question that is always wondered and I am sure is asked very frequently. You have encountered in your professional life Do you have any interesting memories?

Yes, there are many. I would like to share a memory that impressed me the most. When I was working at a special education center, I had a 27-year-old female client who was diagnosed with severe disability. My client could only use 3 words due to his mental capacity. “Mom, no and let's go” It was thought that there were no words she knew and could understand other than these words. We worked together for about 5 months.

During one of the sessions in which he could not understand me and I was trying to understand him, I decided to read a storybook. By choosing my favorite fairy tale from the book, I started reading the same tale in every session. After a while, I started to measure their reactions, pausing in between. I witnessed that he did not speak throughout the story, but only repeated the words "mom, no, let's go" faster and louder than usual when I stopped. He actually wanted to say 'keep going'. Even though she didn't say the word "continue", she showed me that she wanted me to continue as much as she could. That day was incredible for me, it was the best proof that success can be achieved with determination.
