Vertigo

It is an important subject about which movies have been made and books have been written. Its Turkish equivalent means dizziness. It's actually a disease. An ear, nose, throat and neurology disease.

However, sometimes we feel dizzy when we receive very bad news, sometimes when we are overjoyed, and sometimes when we are confused. As an ear, nose and throat doctor, I will talk to you about the disease aspect of vertigo.

Vertigo is a Latin word. It comes from the root verter, meaning that something rotates around its own axis. In other words, a person suffering from vertigo feels that the surroundings are spinning. In fact, such a situation does not actually exist.

However, the patient is so affected that he cannot stand due to this spinning sensation and falls. He/she tries to sit down and stand still by holding on to something. Sometimes it happens while lying down or turning to the right or left, in which case he cannot get out of his bed and in some cases cannot even open his eyelids or look around.

An important finding of our vertigo patients is loss of balance. He has attacks of falling to the right or left while walking. He has difficulty keeping his balance and walks swaying.

In addition to dizziness, feelings of nausea and vomiting may also accompany the picture. Our patients may even have to go to the emergency room because these complaints last a long time. However, since it is usually short-term, they apply to ENT outpatient clinics.

Generally, the reason is that the balance stones move out of their places and circulate in the balance fluid in the semicircular canals. This situation is popularly referred to as the displacement of balance crystals. In medicine, we call this AUTOCONIA disease.

Of course, there are many causes of vertigo, I will list a few of them and explain the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, especially the so-called crystal drift, in this article.

Among other common causes of vertigo, sudden rises and falls in blood pressure, Reduced blood flow to the brain, some brain diseases, migraines, psychological conditions, inflammations and diseases of the inner ear and middle ear can be listed.

We carefully examine all these causes, perform the necessary examinations and begin treatment after diagnosing the cause of the disease. We plan a treatment according to the disease caused by it.

In otoconia disease, which is called the shift of balance crystals, dizziness ends within minutes and sometimes seconds. However, a very shocking dizziness is experienced. Our patients feel like the world is turning upside down. Displacement of balance crystals usually occurs due to head hitting something, traffic accident, high pressure, blows to the head and sudden hard head movements. When we examine these patients, their tests and ENT examination findings are generally normal. We can only diagnose our patients by performing a test.

The name of this special test is VNG TEST. In this test, which takes about half an hour, it can be determined precisely whether the balance stones are out of place or not.

When the balance stones come out of place, they enter the semicircular canals. With the VNG test, we can find out which channel the balance stones enter. This is exactly how the treatment is done. In other words, we treat according to which semicircular canal it enters. There are 3 semicircular canals in the inner ear. Front, rear and center channels.

Balance stones mostly enter the posterior semicircular canal. In the treatment, a maneuver appropriate to this channel is performed. All these treatments are performed on the VNG device.

Today, as a doctor, I wanted to write about your health.

Thank you for your interest.
