What is Fibromyalgia?

One of the most important problems of the modern age is Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Fibromyalgia, which is more common in women and perfectionist people, creates very important symptoms that disrupt the quality of life. Fibromyalgia, also known as muscle rheumatism or soft tissue rheumatism, is a disorder characterized by persistent pain in certain parts of the body. There is no test that can definitively confirm the diagnosis of fibromyalia. During the diagnosis phase, the physician examines all necessary tests, listens to the patient's story, and performs a medical-physical examination of the patient. 18 sensitive points on the body are examined. When there is no identifiable medical condition to explain chronic pain lasting more than 3 months, a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made, taking into account the available data. In this respect, the term phantom disease is also used for Fibromyalgia syndrome

Intense pain is the most prominent symptom in Fibromyalgia syndrome. During tender point examination, there is usually pain in at least 11 of the 18 points. Patients often use the phrase "I hurt everywhere" when expressing themselves. There are sensitive and painful areas in the body on the neck, back, shoulders, waist, hips, elbows and knees. The painful points and pain intensities of all fibromyalgia patients are not exactly the same. Many or some of the symptoms can be seen in the person.

Since fibromyalgia is a syndrome, its treatment is multidisciplinary. After receiving a diagnosis from the specialist physician of the relevant branch, the patient's exercise program should be organized, diet programs should be created and psychological support should be provided. If the person is deficient, vitamin and mineral supplements should be given. Intestinal problems should be eliminated and the patient should stay away from foods to which he or she is allergic or intolerant. If the person has teeth clenching, tooth-gum infection, or any other problem, he/she should definitely get support from the dentist. For the musculoskeletal problems of fibromyalgia patients, manual therapy, joint mobilizations, clinical exercises and Medical massage is also important. Fibromyalgia patients need to exercise in a way and for a time that suits them. Heavy or improper training and sports can further increase existing pain. That's why the work should be done under the supervision of a physiotherapist. The person's sleep should also be regular and of high quality.

There is no single treatment for fibromyalgia. When patients constantly expect definitive results from a single treatment and do not get results from the treatment, or when the relief provided by the treatment lasts too short a time, they become pessimistic and the pain may increase further. In the treatment of fibromyalgia, it is also important for the family to understand the patient, to have knowledge about the disease, and to provide psychological support to the patient.
