Causes of neck pain:
Neck injuries
Pain due to damage to soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck. can develop. This injury most often occurs after motor vehicle accidents. The injury occurs with a sudden movement of the neck, first forward and then backward. Pain radiating from the neck to the back is at the forefront. During the examination, pain and stiffness with neck movements, a feeling of heaviness in the head, and the presence of pain in fixed positions of the neck are noteworthy. Usually symptoms improve in 4-6 weeks. Rest and a neck brace are recommended for the first 24-72 hours after the injury. In the early stages, painkillers and muscle relaxants may be recommended for short periods of time. Physical therapy modalities, massage, mobilization, stretching and exercises are important in treatment.
Cervical herniation
Cervical herniation is the herniation of the tissue inside the disc to the outside due to the rupture of the hard tissue around the disc. This condition may be due to a structural or traumatic event, or it may result from disc degeneration that occurs with age. Neck pain, limitation of movement, numbness in the arms, weakness, headache, dizziness, and tinnitus may occur. Anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant drugs can be used as drug treatment. Physical therapy and exercise program are an important part of the treatment.
Neck calcification
Neck calcification is defined as a structural disorder due to wear and formation of bone protrusions due to the degenerative process in the discs and joints. It is the most common cause of neck pain with aging.
Neck canal stenosis
It can be expressed as neck calcification or narrowing of the spinal canal due to hernias. Bone protrusions formed due to herniated disc or calcification in the area where the canal narrowing occurs may directly press on the spinal cord, causing numbness in the feet, weakness, and urinary and fecal incontinence. This condition is called myelopathy. It is the most severe complication of canal stenosis. Surgical treatment may be required.
Myofascial pain (crush)
It is the most common cause of neck pain. Tight bands and trigger points in the muscles that cause regional pain and referred pain when pressed are characteristic of this disease.
Apart from these diseases, infections, inflammatory rheumatic diseases and tumors may cause neck pain. In these cases, further examination and treatment is required.
