- What are wisdom teeth?
- When do they form?
- In what cases should they be removed?
Wisdom teeth are an issue that creates problems and concerns in the majority of the society. This is because wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth. As other teeth take their place in the jaw, they either erupt out of their normal positions or remain under the gums and/or bone. Decay or other problems in wisdom teeth occur because people cannot brush those areas well due to their position.
However, eliminating or removing the problems in wisdom teeth is not as difficult a treatment as one might think. If these teeth have erupted in the mouth, they can be extracted as an ordinary tooth extraction under simple anesthesia. If it is impacted, it is extracted with a small operation under simple anesthesia.
In what cases should wisdom teeth be removed?
If it prevents the cleaning of the area and increases the risk of caries formation.
If it causes trauma (wound) to the surrounding soft tissues during chewing
If it causes inflammation (Pain, facial swelling, fever)
Because they remain embedded If they put pressure on the jawbone and other teeth
When they cause bad breath
If they pose a risk of cyst formation in the jawbone because they remain impacted
Why Do Teeth Remain Impacted? p>
- Long-lasting inflammation thickens the mucosa on the tooth
- Pressure from neighboring teeth
- The bone is too dense
- Abnormal positions
- Lack of space in the jaw
- Extra teeth or cystic formations around permanent teeth
- Infections in the jawbone
- Milk teeth remaining in the mouth for too long
- Premature loss of milk teeth
- Genetic causes
- Radiographic Evaluation
Radiographic evaluation is necessary to determine the shape of the impacted tooth, its proximity to adjacent anatomical spaces and whether there is a pathological condition around it. Periapical, occlusal and panoramic radiographs are used for radiographic evaluation.
Apical Resection:
Inflammatory tissue formed at the tip of the roots of the teeth (in cases where it cannot be treated with root canal treatment). It is removed by a surgical procedure. It is also preferred because it is a direct method in cases where root canal treatment sessions need to be kept for very long periods.
