POLLEN ALLERGIES

Although spring months are the season of nature's awakening, happiness and joy, for many people it is a season of recurring and annoying allergic diseases.

Allergy is accompanied by a loss of tolerance to some substances that people do not normally react to and are generally not harmful.

Airways (nose and lungs) are the general entry points into the body of allergic substances floating in the air through breathing. Pollens, house dust mites and molds that reach through the air are the main environmental allergens, and the seeds of invisible plants called 'pollen' in the spring months cause complaints such as cough, asthma attacks, persistent runny nose, sneezing, nose and eye itching, and sinusitis in sensitive people. These complaints may be accompanied by a constant state of weakness, fatigue and even depression.

Which type of pollen causes complaints and when?

While tree pollen generally causes complaints in early spring (February starting in mid-April until mid-April), grass and grain pollens in mid-spring (starting in mid-March until the end of June), and weed pollens in late summer and autumn (year-round in hot regions). Grain and grass pollens cause stronger allergic reactions than tree pollens. Most people who think they are allergic to poplar pollen are allergic to grass pollen.

Can allergies be prevented by staying away from green areas?

It is generally not possible to avoid pollen by staying away from green areas. Pollens are invisible to the eye and can spread to distances of hundreds of kilometers by wind in the atmosphere.

People with recurrent pollen allergies should use preventive medications for allergic diseases before their complaints begin.

Who should be vaccinated?

Especially patients who have persistent complaints despite drug treatment or whose complaints continue for a long time may benefit from allergy vaccine treatments. Vaccinations can be given year-round or starting before the pollen season and throughout the pollen season. For this reason, they need to consult an allergic disease specialist to determine which pollen they are allergic to.

DO NOT DRY CLOTHES OUTSIDE, DO SPORTS WITH A MASK

Patient with pollen allergy People may benefit from some simple protection measures:

•Allergic patients should avoid drying their clothes outside, as pollen easily sticks to the laundry. Clothes of allergic children should be changed when they come home.
•Clothes should not be dried in the open air, and hair should be washed before going to bed to remove pollen stuck to the hair. Daily clothes should not be removed in the bedroom.
•Those with eye allergies can use wide sunglasses.
•Pollen filters should be changed before the season and, if possible, windows should not be opened while driving.
•Cover the mouth and nose in the morning hours when pollen is most prevalent. You can do sports with masks that cover your skin. Windows should be kept closed during these hours.
