What Is a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy?

People have experienced at some point in their lives that their predictions are surprisingly accurate. For example, after you thought a business conversation would go badly, you wouldn't be surprised by the negativities you encountered during the conversation because you already expected and predicted it would happen. In this and similar events, people tend to think that these predictions are correct, thinking that they know themselves and what they can do very well. While this approach may be correct, it is important not to underestimate the impact of these predictions and expectations on behavior. People realize the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy when their expectations and beliefs affect their behavior at the subconscious level. In other words, the individual acts in accordance with his expectations about the event that will happen and ensures that these expectations are correct. A common example of self-fulfilling prophecy in psychology studies is the placebo effect. The placebo effect refers to the improvement in outcomes measured by scientific or clinical studies of participants who did not receive any significant treatment. In other words, the belief of the participants in recovery affects the treatment. Research on this effect proves that belief can be a very powerful thing.

We can say that self-fulfilling prophecy can lead to both good and bad thought and behavior cycles. When we believe something about ourselves, we are more likely to act in ways that correspond to our beliefs and thus reinforce our beliefs and encourage the same behavior. Similarly, when we believe something about others, we can act in a way that encourages them to confirm our assumptions and strengthen our beliefs about them. For this reason, self-fulfilling prophecy is possible not only within certain events but also interpersonally.

The concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy can be difficult to understand. There can be a range of results because the actions taken to make the assumption true usually do not make much sense. However, the impact of this concept on our lives is undeniable. The formation of all these beliefs, assumptions and predictions is a very natural process, and it does not seem healthy to have too much influence on what you will do and what path you will follow.

"It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task that will affect a successful outcome more than anything else."

William James
