Eye diseases

-What is eye disease?

Eye disease is all structural and functional disorders in the eye. These diseases are not just diseases that affect the eye. Visual impairment is also very effective on learning. Among the sensory organs, its share in learning is overwhelmingly large. Impairment in visual functions even determines which profession we can or cannot do. The eye is not an independent organ, it works in harmony with the whole body. Many systemic diseases, such as diabetes, blood pressure, goiter, rheumatic diseases, as well as infections and tumors that affect other parts of the body, can also affect eye tissues. For this reason, eye checks also enable us to understand whether these diseases are present and their severity. For this very reason, even if the disease seems to cause symptoms only in the eyes, it is necessary to protect and treat the entire body appropriately.

-What are the misconceptions we know to be true about eye diseases. Could you enlighten our readers?

We should always avoid the sun. It is wrong for our children to play outdoors on sunny days. It prevents the development of eye numbers and vitamin D reduces the symptoms of diabetes as well as in all body development.

- What is the most obvious way to understand eye disorders in our children?

Children are the future. In their eyes, the correction we make means seeing our future. In addition, diseases seen in childhood only give good results if they are treated at an early age. For this reason, our children's eyes wander, both eyes cannot look in the same direction, they tremble, they look at objects closely or do not follow them at all, they squint their eyes, they have difficulty opening their eyes in sunny environments, their pupils are different in color and size. If there is constant burring, redness, swelling or drooping of the eyelids, we should consider that there may be a disorder in the eyes. Apart from all these, if there is a difference in our children's eyes that you cannot name, you should definitely have an eye check.

-Our people in Turkey are sufficiently knowledgeable about eye diseases. Why?

Compared to previous years, there is an increasing awareness thanks to the media, but it is not enough. The eye is perceived as a separate organ from the body and is evaluated on its own, or the thought that there is no need to come for a check-up without any complaints continues. Here, the eye is generally viewed and evaluated as if it were an organ independent of the body. However, all organs of the body are interrelated.

-What is the importance of early diagnosis in eye diseases. Can early diagnosed eye disorders be completely cured?

Early diagnosis is very important in eye diseases, as in all diseases. If the diagnosis is made before permanent eye damage occurs, there will be no loss of function in the long term. Certainly, many eye diseases can be controlled with early diagnosis and treatment. Even patients' lives can be saved with an early diagnosis made by simply examining the eye. The eye is the only organ in the body that rheumatic, infective, heart, kidney and intestinal diseases can be diagnosed by eye examination.

-What is eye pressure? What will be the consequences if high eye pressure is not treated?

Our eyes have an average blood pressure, just like systemic blood pressure. Eye pressure should be neither high nor low to protect the health of our eyes. Eye pressure above normal is called eye pressure disease (Glaucoma, Blackwater Disease). In high eye pressure, the optic nerve, which has a very important function in our eyes' vision, is damaged. In addition, although the eye pressure is low, there is another type of eye pressure that causes optic nerve damage, just like in patients with high eye pressure, and this is called Normal tension glaucoma. It is generally a silent disease. If it is not diagnosed early, it causes irreversible loss of optic nerve and vision. Because it is insidious, it is necessary to have a full eye examination at least every 2 years, especially after the age of 40, and once a year after the age of 50.

- Recently, we see that sunglasses are sold in many large and small markets and stores. What would you say about it? Sunglasses are in front of our eyes. What is emi?

Sunglasses must have features that block harmful rays, especially from the sun. Just as being dark in color is not enough, dark colored and unprotective sunglasses cause the rays to cause more damage to our eyes.

-There is a similar issue on the agenda again. What dangers await those who use close-fitting glasses, such as sunglasses, sold on the streets, without going to a doctor?

Eyeglass lenses can be made by placing different substances into the lenses with very advanced technologies today to protect eye health. These substances protect our eyes from harmful light and provide a clear image. Glasses are not just ordinary glasses with a prescription. For this reason, we should use the healthiest glasses we can, regardless of near or far. Glasses made of poor quality lenses tire our eyes, do not provide a good image and may increase the transmission of harmful rays to the eye.

Although it varies according to age, it can be seen in children in the first year of life, between the ages of 3 and 5. Eye control is very important at this age. Your doctor determines future follow-ups based on your condition. In later ages, eye check-ups are recommended at least every 2 years after the age of 40, and once a year after the age of 50.

Apart from this, in case of any eye complaint or systemic disease, eye control should be done frequently.

-We know that many people He uses his gap glasses for at least 3-5 years. How often should people who wear prescription glasses go for a check-up? Can we understand whether the eye numbers are increasing or decreasing?

While glasses should be checked every 6 months at most in childhood, checks should not exceed two years even when the eye numbers stop progressing. If we cannot see as clearly with our glasses as before, if we squint our eyes, if we experience pain, burning or redness in our eyes, we should definitely go for a check-up, thinking that our glasses may not suit us anymore.
