Ikea has been the world's largest furniture retailer since 2008. But there's a reason it's the biggest. We call it the ikea effect. So, what is the role of this effect, named after a furniture company, in our relations?
First of all, let's start by explaining the ikea effect. Although it is called the ikea effect, its first appearance begins in the 1950s when an American company powdered and packaged everything that could be put in a cake. This process is so practical and easy that all you have to do is add water to the mixture that comes out of the package, mix it and put it in the oven. However, the company cannot achieve the desired level of sales. Then, when the consumer feedback is examined, it is concluded that the mixtures make the cake making very simple, thus devaluing the labor of the people. On top of that, one of the companies producing ready-made cake mix removes eggs and milk from the mixture. Immediately after, the sales of this brand surpass the others. When people measure and pour the milk themselves, break the egg themselves, they feel that they have spent a lot of effort, and they own that cake. They call it the "Ikea Effect", inspired by Ikea's products that are sold in disassembled form and that consumers have to assemble, that is, labor on. Because when people work hard for something, they tend to love it more and value it more. It shows that children are more likely to eat vegetables as a result of their efforts and ownership. Children who already like vegetable food eat more when they participate in the cooking process.
Another situation brought about by the Ikea effect is “I created the worlds!” may have a feeling. Sometimes we can see similar situations in our relationships. Do we continue our relationships that have a negative impact on us with statements such as “I made a man”, “I vacuumed my hair for him” or “I gave years to improve this relationship”?
I made Do we think that a project of ours is more beautiful than the others, and we think, “I worked night and day for this project, this project should receive an award in everything”?
Of course, it is normal for us to complete our work in the best way and expect results. However, we must exaggerate this situation and prevent it from reaching the level that will disrupt our daily routines.
All this effort is actually a motivation for creativity in the way of discovering ourselves, which is in all people. What can we do to bring this effect to our homes and to experience the joy of labor and production? Maybe it will complete a puzzle, maybe we can knit a scarf for someone we love.
