The Suffering of Babies and Families Baby Pains (Infantile Colic) 2

Treatment

For treatment to be effective, an evaluation and approach is required not only for the baby but also for the parents. Supporting parents and addressing their concerns is very helpful. Parents; They should be sure that the pain is not bad and that the recovery will be certain, even if it lasts for a long time, without leaving any damage.

Not every colicky baby may be affected to the same degree or at all by the same treatment.

*The baby can be driven in a stroller or in a normal car for a while. It can be walked around.

*The baby can be held and walked around for a while.

*It can be given a warm bath.

*It can be wrapped in a blanket (not a swaddle).

*The baby's tummy can be rubbed. Then, lie on your stomach and rub your back for a few minutes.

*Recorded heart sounds can be played.

*The sound of a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner can be recorded and played. It may be beneficial to place him in a brightly lit environment.

*Giving a pacifier to calm him down may be tried. (It is not recommended to use a pacifier unless absolutely necessary.)

Paracetamol syrups (such as Calpol, Parol, Tylol) and Ibuprofen syrups (such as Dolven, Pedifen, Ibufen and Apireks), which are commonly used as antipyretics and painkillers, are effective against baby pain. They should not be used because they have no effect.

Drops containing Dicyclomine and Simetroprium may cause serious side effects and may even put the baby into a coma.

Omeprazole has not been shown to be effective in pain.

Gas drops containing Simethicone are widely used. However, the benefits of these drops have not been demonstrated in studies conducted to date.

Probiotics (especially the Lactobacillus reuteri genus) can reduce pain in colicky babies fed with breast milk. Moreover, this treatment has no side effects. However, this probiotic should not be given to formula-fed babies. Because probiotics can cause pain in some formula-fed babies.

Baby pains do not differ depending on the type of breastfeeding. Therefore, the baby's mother should not stop breastfeeding and start using a bottle.

If the baby is fed with formula, the baby should be changed to partially or completely hydrolyzed medical formula. It can significantly reduce pain. Hydrolyzed food does not taste good. The baby may not want to eat. In this case, the baby can be accustomed by mixing the previous food with the hydrolyzed food and giving it to the baby for 4 - 7 days. After getting used to it thoroughly, the previous food can be stopped and only hydrolyzed food can be continued. Another negative feature of hydrolyzed medical formulas is that they are more expensive than normal formulas. For this reason, after 3 - 4 months, when the baby's pain attacks are completely resolved, it can be tried to switch back to normal food.

Soy-containing foods can also be tried. However, they may cause allergic effects and therefore they are not preferred.

There are some studies showing that peppermint, fennel tea, chamomile tea, verbena, lemon balm and licorice root are beneficial in the treatment of colic and shorten the duration of crying. . Ginger, cumin seeds, basil leaves and anise tea may be useful in relieving pain. However, some types of Anise, such as Japanese Star Anise, are toxic and can be dangerous to use on young babies. Therefore, more research needs to be done before we can safely recommend the use of herbal products. Gripe water prepared using dill seed oil, bicarbonate and hydrolyzed glucose can also be tried. However, it should be kept in mind that there is not enough research on these mixtures yet and they may harm the baby.

Colic symptoms decreased in some babies who drank 2 milliliters of 12% sherbet prepared using tea sugar (sucrose) in the morning and evening.

Abdominal massage can be done using devil's infusion or peppermint spirit. A wet hot towel can be used while performing the massage. The towel should not be too hot. There is not yet sufficient research to show that physical therapies, massage, wrapping the baby, and acupuncture are beneficial in the treatment of colic.

Feeding of a baby with colic:

When breastfeeding, the baby should grasp not only the nipple but also the brown area around it with his lips. Otherwise, he may swallow too little air while sucking. It is more convenient to feed the baby in a semi-upright position rather than in a horizontal position. Make sure to relieve the baby's stomach gas between feedings and after feeding. k is required. If it is difficult to burp the baby, this process should be done in 3 steps. The baby's back should be rubbed for 1-2 minutes, first by laying him on the shoulder, then on his stomach, on his knees, and finally on his shoulder again. >

Breastfeeding mothers should not consume ready-made and processed foods.

Breastfeeding mothers should not consume alcohol.

Cow's milk and cow's milk products, eggs, which may have high allergenic effects, are among the mother's foods. Excluding hazelnuts, peanuts, walnuts, wheat, soy, and fish can be very beneficial. Whichever food is suspected, that food is removed from the mother's food and monitored for 1 week. If no improvement is seen, it is added back to the nutrition list. After the baby's pain stops, the mother does not need to continue a low-allergen diet.

In addition, the mother's diet should exclude bitter and spicy foods, very sour foods, citrus fruits, legumes, onions, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and caffeinated foods. It may be necessary to exclude beverages (such as strong tea, coffee and its varieties, cola and chocolate).

Colic treatment should be directed to both the baby and the parent:

*As parents, take turns to care for the baby. Don't let everyone get tired at the same time and lose patience.

*Do not hold the baby in your arms all the time and calm your nerves by putting it in its crib from time to time.

*Beware of losing yourself in feelings of helplessness, depression, guilt, anger and anger during colic attacks. You may not be able to avoid it. If you experience these extreme emotions, please share them with family members and your baby's doctor.

*Do not judge yourself. Don't try to measure your success by looking at the intensity of your baby's crying. Colic is not the result of your poor parenting. Also, the baby's unstoppable crying is not a sign that he does not want you.

*Protect your health. Eat healthy foods. Make time for exercise and walking.

*If you can sleep during your baby's sleep hours, sleep too.

*Do not approach alcohol and sedatives.

*Your baby's colic attacks will overwhelm you. When necessary, ask your spouse or another family member for help. If you are extremely worn out, call your doctor and consult.

*Remember that colic attacks are not permanent and will disappear completely after a few months without leaving any damage.

The reason why the baby has colic is Other negative consequences:

It increases the risk of postpartum depression in the mother.

The mother may get tired and give up breastfeeding and wean the baby early.
