Sinusitis is the infection of the sinus cavities located around the nose. Sinus cavities; It consists of the maxillary sinuses located on the cheeks under the eyes, the ethmoid sinuses located between the two eyes, the frontal sinuses located on the forehead and the sphenoid sinuses located towards the head. Sinuses are normally air-filled cavities within the skull, each connected to the nasal passage. We call the infection of these spaces sinusitis.
WHAT DOES SINUSITIS CAUSE?
Sinusitis usually occurs as a result of an upper respiratory tract infection, when the mouth of the sinuses becomes blocked with edema and cannot be ventilated. Curvatures in the nasal bone, allergies, growths in the nasal flesh, anatomical disorders that block the mouth of the sinuses and smoking predispose to the formation of sinusitis. The vast majority of sinusitis is initially viral. However, after a while, as the appropriate environment is created in the sinus, bacteria also become involved. When sinusitis lasts less than 4 weeks, it is called acute sinusitis. If the disease lasts more than 12 weeks, it is called chronic sinusitis.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF SINUSITIS?
In acute sinusitis, usually headache and facial pain. , inflammatory discharge from the nose, postnasal drip and sometimes fever are observed. In chronic sinusitis, headache and facial pain, nasal congestion and postnasal drip are usually observed. If sinusitis is left untreated, it can cause serious complications such as preseptal cellulitis, eye abscess, and meningitis.
