Domestic violence, one of the issues we frequently encounter on the agenda, is a problem that disrupts individual and social life. Violence is the situation where an individual suffers mental or physical damage as a result of the use of force and pressure. Unfortunately, we often see and hear that individuals are subjected to violence by the people closest to them, especially family members. Domestic violence occurs when the dominant family member forces the other family member to behave in an undesirable manner, exhibits aggressive behavior, hits or injures, or communicates in an insulting or humiliating manner. Although we mostly see violence as a physical act, we should know that violence has physical, emotional and psychological dimensions.
Domestic violence causes the individual to have insensitive or negative feelings towards the concept of family. The family, which protects the child from all kinds of dangers that exist outside, is no longer a safe space for the individual. As the individual loses his/her existing confidence in the family structure and concept, the individual begins to develop distrust in life. In the adulthood of individuals exposed to domestic violence; It becomes inevitable for them to experience problems that negatively affect both the individual and their environment, such as being overly stressed, lacking self-confidence and introversion, tending to violence, and suffering from psychological disorders. As Adnan Çoban stated, "violence causes wounds that are difficult to repair on people's bodies and souls."
Although we often hear about it on the agenda, domestic violence is a situation that is generally hidden and covered up. So what we see in the media is just the tip of the iceberg. As a result of the research conducted by Hacettepe University in 2014 with the support of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, it was found that women were exposed to violence between approximately 29 and 49 percent when many aspects of domestic violence against women were considered. In the same research, it was found that the level of violence varies by region, and the regions with the most violence are Northeastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia. It has been found that the people who use violence are often men.
It should not be forgotten that violence is a learned behavior. Especially observing family members It is a learned behavior as a result of practice. People who were exposed to or observed domestic violence during their childhood and adolescence are very likely to show this behavior in their later years. When we examine violent individuals, we see that they have communication problems. In situations such as difficulty expressing oneself or feeling humiliated, anger emerges along with a feeling of inadequacy, and we see that the individual turns to violence when he cannot manage this in a healthy way. At the same time, the points of the society we live in that praise violence and even state that it is necessary encourage the individual to commit violence. The active use of idioms such as those who do not beat their daughters, beats them with their knees, beating is from heaven, and never leave a colt on their belly and a stick on their back are cultural factors that normalize violence. As a result of healthy interventions on all these negative factors, violence can be prevented or controlled.
