Can Gallbladder Stones Be Dissolved?

What is Sludge in the Gallbladder?

In the presence of the causes that form gallstones, the density of the bile first increases and it reaches the consistency of slime. Later, it often leads to stone formation.
Surgery may be considered in case of symptomatic bile sludge.

What are the Symptoms of Gallbladder Stones?

Especially after excessive fatty meals, bloating in the abdomen, indigestion, back pain. (between the two shoulder blades) and pain in the right shoulder may be observed. Pain may be felt in the stomach and under the right rib. Nausea and vomiting may occur.
If the stones fall into the bile duct, jaundice, darkening of the urine color, lightening of the stool color, and fever may occur.
If the stones affect the pancreatic duct and cause a condition called pancreatitis (a type of inflammation of the pancreas), it may occur in the form of a belt on both sides of the waist. Pain on the side may also occur.

By Which Examination Can Gallbladder Stone Be Detected?

Gallbladder stone is usually diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography. If the stones are large, they may also be visible on an abdominal tomography scan taken for another purpose.

Do Gallbladder Stones Prevent Pregnancy?

Detection of gallstones in the gallbladder in women of childbearing age does not prevent pregnancy. However, the correct approach is for the patient to seek advice from a general surgeon about the possible complications of gallbladder stones and the surgery option.

What are the Possible Complications of Gallbladder Stones?

Gallbladder Stones primarily cause chronic inflammation within the gallbladder. If the stones sit and block the exit part of the gallbladder, that is, the opening to the main bile duct, the bile in the gallbladder cannot flow, the gallbladder swells and becomes inflamed. This situation causes the patient to feel severe pain. If left untreated, the inflammation progresses, the gallbladder bursts and bile spreads into the abdomen, and life-threatening situations may occur.

If stones are poured into the bile duct, they may increase some liver enzymes (cholestasis: obstruction enzymes). Again, this may cause pain and jaundice. Sometimes, if the stone is small, it can pass through the duct into the duodenum on its own. In this case, removing the gallbladder alone will be sufficient without the need for intervention in the bile duct. But the stone in the gallbladder is pure If it falls into the bile duct and remains stuck there, the stone is first entered into the bile duct endoscopically and cleaned with a procedure called ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Colongio Pancreaticography). Then gallbladder surgery is performed. If the stone cannot be removed with ERCP, bile duct surgery is needed to remove the stone from the duct. Gallbladder surgery is performed simultaneously with bile duct surgery to remove the gallbladder.

Gallbladder stones can also affect the pancreatic duct, causing a type of pancreatic inflammation called pancreatitis. In this case, the pain may spread to both sides of the waist in a girdle style.

There are many factors that can cause gallstones.
Gallstones are more common in women, especially those over the age of forty, overweight, blonde, and those who have given birth many times.
Obesity, sedentary life, some blood diseases, diabetes and rapid weight loss increase the formation of gallstones. Genetic factors do not have a direct effect on the formation of gallstones. However, due to some genetically inherited blood diseases, gallstone formation may indirectly increase.

What Are the Types of Gallbladder Stones?

There are two main ones. There are different types of gallstones. These are cholesterol and pigment stones. Pigment stones consist of bilirubin, which gives bile its color. In our country, gallstones are mostly seen as cholesterol stones.

Do Gallbladder Stones Pass Naturally?

Gallbladder stones naturally fall into the main bile duct and get stuck there. It can either remain in the duodenum or be excreted from the intestines naturally. However, even in this case, stones form again due to the disproportion of the substances in the diseased gallbladder itself or its bile content. Therefore, the approach to gallstones is not like the approach to kidney or bladder stones. Gallbladder stones require surgery in most cases.

The gallbladder stone can be removed by breaking it, etc. No attempt is made to lower it. Because the stone that breaks into smaller pieces can affect the pancreatic duct and cause inflammation of the pancreas called pancreatitis. Or the stones get stuck in the channel If it remains, first the bile duct is cleaned with an endoscopic procedure called ERCP, and then the gallbladder must be removed by surgery.
