Enuresis nocturna is one of the most common urinary system problems of childhood. We define enuresis as bedwetting 2 or more times a week for at least 3 months in a child older than 5 years of age who does not have any organic disease. Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Özlem Ünlügedik gave information on the subject.
Monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna is also known as enuresis. There are no symptoms during the day other than wetting the bed at night. Non-monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna is accompanied by symptoms such as sudden urgency during the day, frequent urination, daytime urinary incontinence, and chronic constipation.
Enuresis is seen in 15-20% around the age of 5. At the age of 10, this rate decreases to 5%. It is approximately twice as common in boys.
Bedwetting is more common in children of parents who had nocturnal enuresis in childhood.
Enuresis reduces the child's self-confidence and can cause psychological problems. In addition, the fact that our society does not have sufficient information on this subject causes the subject to be exploited. For this reason, the diagnosis and treatment of the disease should not be delayed.
Some simple recommendations should be followed at the beginning of treatment;
1. Fluid intake should be regulated to 6-7 glasses during the day.
2. Fluid intake should be restricted 2 hours before bedtime. Drinking caffeine-containing liquids such as tea, coffee and cola should be avoided in the evening hours.
3. It should be ensured that people go to the toilet regularly every 2-3 hours at home and at school.
4. The bladder should be emptied before going to bed and the child should be woken up 2 hours after sleeping and allowed to urinate.
5. A child who wets the bed should not be punished.
6. The child should be asked to note wet and dry nights in a calendar format. It should be rewarded after staying dry at night.
If we look at the specific treatment stage; There are separate treatment approaches for the causative factors:
Alarm therapy can be applied to patients who have difficulty waking up.
Drugs that reduce bladder contraction
Drugs that reduce the amount of urine at night are used. .
