Vaginal Bleeding and Pregnancy
Vaginal bleeding mostly occurs in the first 3 months of pregnancy and is not always a sign of a problem. However, bleeding in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters mostly occurs as a result of a complication.
Some basic things about bleeding need to be known:
- When bleeding occurs, be sure to monitor the amount with the help of a pad. should be done. It should be known how much and what type of bleeding there is.
- A tampon or anything else should not be inserted into the vagina, vaginal douche should not be performed and sexual intercourse should not be attempted
- The doctor should definitely be informed
First Half of Pregnancy
The frequency of bleeding in the first half of pregnancy is 20-30%. Bleeding may occur other than miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and molar pregnancy. These reasons:
- Implantation Bleeding:The implantation bleeding of the baby into the uterus probably occurs 10-12 days after fertilization. Sometimes it may be very light and sometimes it may be similar to menstrual bleeding. Due to this bleeding, women may not realize that they are pregnant.
- Infection:Bleeding may occur due to infection in the vagina or urinary tract.
- After Intercourse:It may occur especially in women with cervical wounds.
Miscarriage
Bleeding may be a sign of miscarriage, but it does not mean that there will be a miscarriage immediately after bleeding. Bleeding occurs in 20-30% of normal pregnancies in early pregnancy. Half of the women who have bleeding during this period do not experience miscarriage. Approximately 15-20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and most of them occur up to 12 weeks, mostly in the first 8 weeks.
Miscarriage Symptoms:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Cram-like pain in the groin (stronger than menstrual pain)
- Breaking from the vagina
The majority of miscarriages cannot be prevented and the most important reason is that the baby is disabled. Miscarriage does not mean that there will be no healthy baby later or that you are abnormal.
Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy in a place other than the uterus. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the tubes. The probability of ectopic pregnancy is 1 in 60 pregnancies.
Ectopic Pregnancy Findings:
- Cram-like pain in the groin
- Sharp pain in the abdomen
- Low beta hCG level
- Vaginal bleeding
Women at Risk of Ectopic Pregnancy:
- Having an infection in the tubes
- Having had an ectopic pregnancy before
- Having had an abdominal surgery before
Molar Pregnancy (Grape Pregnancy)
It is a rare cause of bleeding in the early period. Abnormal tissue development occurs instead of an embryo. It is known as gestational trophoblastic disease. It is called grape pregnancy because it looks like a grape among the public.
Molar Pregnancy Signs:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Beta HCG being higher than normal
- Baby heartbeat is not seen
- Grape grains image on ultrasound
Second Half of Pregnancy
The cause of light bleeding is due to cervical wound and enlargement.The result of late-term bleeding can pose serious dangers for the pregnant woman and the baby. You must immediately inform your doctor if you experience bleeding during this period.
Placenta Abruptia
Vaginal bleeding occurs as a result of the placenta separating from the place where it attached to the uterus before birth. It is seen in 1% of pregnant women and occurs mostly in the last weeks.
Placenta Abruptia Findings:
- Bleeding
- Abdominal pain
Pregnant women at risk for placenta abruption:
- Previous pregnancy
- 35 years of age or older
- Previous placenta abruptia
- Sickle cell anemia (sickle cell anemia)
- Hypertension
- Collision and injury to the abdominal area
- Cocaine use
Plasanta Previa
Placenta uterus It settles in the lower part and at the exit of the cervix. It is a very serious situation. It is seen in approximately 1 in 200 pregnant women.Painless bleeding occurs.
Pregnant women at risk for placenta previa:
- Previously having a pregnancy
- Giving birth by cesarean section
- Having other surgeries performed on the uterus
- Twin pregnancy
Early D birth
Vaginal bleeding may be a sign of labor. Engagement may come before birth. If it occurs in the early period (before the 37th week), it indicates premature birth.
Signs of Early Labor:
- Engagement
- Pressure in the groin or lower abdomen
- A pain in the lower back that is different from previous ones
- Regular contraction and hardening of the uterus
