Do People Without a Gallbladder Gain Weight?

No organ or tissue in the body of living things is unnecessary. Based on our current medical knowledge, we may not know exactly what functions some organs or tissues perform, which is quite normal and should be accepted.

“The gallbladder is a separate organ in our body on its own. “
Can people without a gallbladder gain weight?

There are separate blood vessels and nerves going to this organ. According to today's knowledge, the function of the gallbladder in the body is to store bile fluid (bile storage). Removing this organ through surgical intervention may, of course, cause some symptoms.

The degree of these symptoms varies from patient to patient and may even increase in the same patient from time to time. Among these symptoms is weight gain.

As far as we observed, weight gain can occur in approximately 85% of patients. While this increase is around 2-3 kg in some patients, it can reach up to 30-50 kg in others.

The reasons for this weight increase are:

1- Actual weight gain

Symptoms (pain, bloating, nausea, etc.) triggered by food before the surgery due to disease in the gallbladder (stones, inflammation, etc.) decrease and disappear after the surgery. Thus, patients' eating and drinking patterns may change. This condition alone may lead to weight gain.

In some cases, bile fluid may rise towards the stomach (Bile Gastritis) and the patient may need to constantly eat or snack to balance the bile acid.

2 - False feeling of weight gain

When there is no bile storage, bile (bilirubin) produced in the liver is secreted irregularly into the intestines. This situation causes food not to be digested adequately and gas to accumulate in the intestines. In other words, gas bloating occurs in the abdomen as if there is weight gain, some patients describe this as pregnancy bloating.

In addition, a certain amount of laziness in the intestines may develop after gallbladder surgery. This situation may cause food to move slower in the intestines and increase in rate.

As I explained at the beginning of my article, no organ or tissue in our body is unnecessary (even the appendix and foreskin can be included in this), but the criteria are limited. We can continue our lives with minimal side effects when operated within the framework of the conditions.

Diet can be applied occasionally to prevent or reduce weight gain and bloating.

111 people who had gallbladder surgery participated in the survey we conducted in our Gallbladder Group on February 13, 2018. According to the survey, the rate of those who gained weight after gallbladder surgery was 60.3% (67 people). Some of the patients who participated in the survey and answered "NO" are patients who have just had surgery, and whether or not these patients will gain weight in the future should be taken into consideration.
