We have really been caught up in 2020 with disaster news after disaster. Nationally and globally, earthquakes come as news of wars and epidemics arrive. All of them leave a mark on our spiritual world. We are experiencing extraordinary things. Despite this, our species and mammals that have survived 10 thousand years ago have survived these and many other challenges. We've been through and survived more than that, including the ice age. But it would be a bit of a shame if we were to suffer as much damage today as people did back then, and if we were affected as much as our ancestors were, despite all the culture and science we have built...
Our bodies and minds are always warning us to survive. Some of our characteristics, which we normally consider as diseases, emerge from time to time as an ability to survive. For example, obsessive-compulsive disorder patients sometimes have difficulty in their daily routine, and they may not be able to do what other people do with the same speed and efficiency. Because they may think that they need to stay in the bathroom for 3-4 hours even if they know that they are dysfunctional, even though other people stay for half an hour. They may think that they need to wash their hands for a long time and very frequently, while other people wash their hands in a few minutes. This can make life difficult for OCD harvesters under normal circumstances. However, for example, the need to wash hands more frequently and with extra care is a reality that modern medicine emphasizes during epidemics. We have these abilities in the codes in our biology, left over from the times when modern medicine was not so advanced, that may be dysfunctional most of the time, but may come in handy in epidemic situations.
Despite this, although illness anxiety disorder and panic disorder are things that can be beneficial for the species from time to time, and they have been beneficial since they are common diseases that have been preserved so far, they may challenge us in the current global threat of "coronavirus". Today, in the modern world, we may need to pay some attention to use the advanced knowledge of our forebrain - our modern brain - before we automatically take action with the movements that our biology urges us to as a war strategy against the threat.
When we feel threatened, we have the ability to act impulsively and with sudden, angry and fearful intense emotions. We are a species that responds to threat. If the threat is too great, sometimes we can bypass all this intensity of behavior and emotion and become frozen and emotionless (spiritually paralyzed). Despite this, scientific information is very clear today about what to do about the virus outbreak: 1) reducing social contact so that the virus does not become widespread in society and does not spread from infected individuals, 2) isolating and quarantining sick individuals so that the capacity of intensive care beds is not exceeded with a sudden outbreak, 3) preventing possible virus infections. In order to prevent the virus from passing into the blood from contaminated areas against contact situations; washing our hands frequently with soapy water or disinfectants, not touching our mouth, nose, or face without washing our hands, and keeping as much distance as possible when we meet with others.
Modern humans know all this information with our side and forebrain. and we learn. We can organize these with our front brain. However, in cases of fear and panic, our emotional brain (limbic and other), which has been with us since ancient times, comes into play. We cannot think logically. Imagine that your friend you met in the morning and could not maintain social distance is positive for Coronavirus and you cough. The first thing to do is to run to the hospital. (You may also find yourself doing another irrational behavior). But while running, it is very difficult to think about how close you are to the people around you, whether you are using public transportation or driving, and whether you need to wear a mask to protect others. So when you feel threatened, there may be a short circuit in contact with your logical side, your modern brain. Therefore, being less exposed to messages that make you feel threatened will be good for your rational brain. Again, keeping your distance from unhealthy and false information can give you an advantage. Finally, systematically accessing the correct information for a certain period of time will also be useful for your modern brain to learn the most rational behavior at that moment. You can experience the same pattern of panic and irrational behavior that we experience if we contract the virus, without being infected with the virus. Moreover, this may cause us to catch the virus. Sometimes the strategies our spiritual world employs for evolutionary survival can paradoxically lead us to danger. For example, WhatsApp groups, Twitter Imagine learning that everyone in your neighborhood is infected with the virus, through a spoof and a lie, from Twitter or Facebook. If you are someone who has not had sufficient contact with reliable information beforehand and who has not protected himself very much in terms of threat perception, the first thing you will probably do, as in the example above, is to run to the hospital. However, in this panic, it is very difficult to think about how close you are to the people around you while running, whether you are using public transportation or driving, and whether you should wear a mask to protect others. Although the news is false and you know the necessary precautions, going to the hospital without taking them (you can also do irrational things) will put you in danger during the journey. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, you may find yourself endangering yourself and your environment by saying goodbye to your modern defenses by receiving false news.
Spiritually, people are medicine for people, and socializing is actually good for people. When people are under threat, they heal by contact with loved ones. But if we know that socializing today is risky for a while against the growth of the epidemic, we must look for and increase ways to socialize safely. If there are people living at home other than you, you can plan to increase the enjoyable activities you can do with them. Any activity at home that can make you smile or make you feel together will be good for your spiritual world. Again, telephone and other video communication opportunities can also be an opportunity for distanced socializing. You can organize virtual meetings with your loved ones at regular intervals.
Therefore, when we look at what life should be like in the days of Corona, it will be useful to follow the sources of healthy information you choose at regular intervals to follow the messages of health authorities. Being in contact with news and media networks in a way that does not allow us to feel threatened in a toxic way and protecting ourselves from fake news will also protect our mental and physical health. If you have to come into frequent contact with people due to your profession, doing your duty by adhering to the recommendations of scientific authorities will protect you as much as possible. Our species has been in this type for 10 thousand years, including the ice ages. Without forgetting that we have dealt with threats, today we can accept that the only solution is to do our best by relying on the possibilities of modern medicine in addition to our historical background. We must not forget that we can get out of this war successfully with activities that relax our spiritual world, which sometimes gets confused under threat. To overcome this confusion, if there are others at home, you should look for ways to spend more enjoyable time with them. If there is no one at home, you can plan various and regular meetings where you will feel together with your loved ones through phone or online calls.
As human beings, we have survived many such disasters. We will get through it again. The thing is, as modern medicine and as humans going to Mars, we have to get through this with as little damage as possible. We also know the ways to do this... We may have a chance to win this war if we all act together with a strategy, listen to our modern human brain, and work together by respecting our emotional brain in order to overcome it with the least damage.
