Don't let paralysis (stroke - hemiplegia) make you upset with your life

Paralysis is the third cause of death and the first cause of disability in Turkey. I would like to give some information about Stroke, which has such a high rate of death and disability.

What is Paralysis (Stroke), how does it occur?

Paralysis( Stroke) is a disease that occurs as a result of blockage (ischemic) or bleeding (hemorrhagic) of the vessels feeding the brain. In both cases, blood flow to the brain is impaired. Oxygen and necessary nutrients cannot reach the brain area fed by the blocked or bleeding vessel. As a result, the control of this part of the brain over the body disappears. The symptoms of the disease vary depending on the affected area.
What are the signs and symptoms of stroke?

The signs and symptoms of stroke can be very different. However, all the findings appear suddenly. Signs and symptoms that should suggest a stroke are: very severe headache, confusion, confusion of people, place and time, numbness in any arm, leg or face, weakness or inability to move, sudden slurred speech, loss of vision, loss of balance or coordination. inability to perform required skills.

Who is at risk?

Although stroke occurs primarily with loss of movement, it is actually a result of vascular damage in the brain. For this reason, it is necessary to avoid all kinds of negativities that threaten general body health and vascular structure. Especially those with high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, obesity, smokers, lack of physical activity and alcohol use are at risk.

STROKE (STROKE) REHABILITATION

What is the purpose of rehabilitation and how is it implemented?

The purpose of rehabilitation is to reduce the patient's physical losses, increase his functional capacity, ensure his independence in daily living activities and increase his quality of life. It is also aimed for suitable patients to return to their old profession or have a new job.
After the patient's condition becomes stable, the physiotherapist starts the training after first making a detailed evaluation of the patient, depending on the doctor's diagnosis.
The patient's voluntary participation in the determined program. and his family also He/she needs to know the importance of it.

Rehabilitation is a long-term treatment process. Since each patient's condition is different, it is not possible to predict this period and give a specific time. First, the aim is for the patient to regain movements that can meet his basic needs. Developments in eating-drinking, dressing, undressing, toilet and cleaning activities are closely monitored.

The physiotherapist first works to increase the lost muscle strength and sitting balance. After these are developed, standing balance works, and walking training is started in the patient whose standing balance has improved. Although some patients adapt to this situation quickly, walking may be delayed in others. Intervening infection, epilepsy, pressure sores, heart and blood pressure, and psychological problems may delay walking. These difficulties are overcome with programs implemented by an experienced team, and walking exercises are performed first with support and then without support.

The recovery of the hand on the side of the stroke and its ability to be used in daily tasks may sometimes be delayed. Generally, development in the foot occurs faster than in the hand. A special hand rehabilitation program is applied to patients with this condition. In addition to certain exercises, the patient is encouraged to use the paralyzed hand in daily activities.

The problems of paralysis do not consist only of loss of movement. Some patients may also develop cognitive problems such as speech disorder (aphasia), memory loss, perception deficit, and adaptation disorder. Treatments related to such problems should also be added to the rehabilitation program.

At the end of the rehabilitation process, the majority of patients can regain their walking ability and return to their social and professional lives.

The patient can continue the rehabilitation process after returning home. should be continued. If necessary, treatment is continued by "home therapists (physiotherapists)". On the other hand, by making some arrangements at home, he can continue his daily life without being dependent on anyone.

Return of Dead Brain Cells Is Not Possible, But How Do Patients Heal?

Bleeding of the brain vessels Nerve cells in the brain that die due to damage caused by blockage or blockage do not recover as a result of treatment. So, if brain cells do not heal, how does the patient recover? It is as follows: Mr. Human cells have the capacity to relearn (neurplasticity). By using this, physiotherapists try to teach the abilities of dead brain cells to other healthy brain cells, and this forms the basis of rehabilitation. In other words, lost skills are taught to healthy brain cells thanks to many exercises and treatment techniques performed by physiotherapists.

Early rehabilitation is very important for stroke patients to maximize their functional gains. In a delayed rehabilitation, due to reasons such as muscle shortening, joint calcification, muscle stiffness, loss of strength, the rehabilitation of the patient becomes difficult and permanent disability is paved the way.

The last thing I will say to the patient and the patient's relatives is that it is clear what you will do. We first talked about the importance of early rehabilitation. Your time is very important to you. Use it well.
