Cervical Stenosis and Myelopathy Treatment
Your spine protects your spinal cord and nerves and allows you to stand and bend. The narrowing of the spinal canal occurs due to wear and tear in the cervical vertebrae. Due to the narrowing in the spinal canal, damage may occur to the nerves going to the spinal cord and arms due to pressure.
What is Canal Narrowing?
Spinal canal narrowing is often seen in people over the age of 50. Diseases such as arthritis and scoliosis can worsen spinal stenosis. Patients may have no symptoms or have symptoms that appear gradually or suddenly. These symptoms may include:
• Pain in the neck or back
• Numbness, burning in your arms or legs
• Unsteadiness when walking
• Weakness in fingers, hands, arms and legs
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is made based on the patient's complaints, examination and imaging. The scale evaluates numbness in arms and legs, weakness and coordination problems, bladder and bowel problems, fine motor skills of the hands and balance problems. MRI is used to evaluate the structure of the spinal cord.
Treatment
After a comprehensive evaluation of the posture, neck mobility, strength and flexibility of patients with cervical stenosis complaints, they receive one-on-one training accompanied by a physiotherapist.
Additional non-surgical treatments include:
Anti-inflammatory medications and neuropathic pain medications for symptoms of burning, tingling, and numbness
Training to restore balance and prevent falls Weight loss guidance, more Healthy nutrition and exercise recommendations to relieve pressure on the spine, pilates and yoga to strengthen back muscles
Surgical Treatments
If there is myelopathy near the cervical stenosis, surgery may be required for treatment. Surgery can prevent further spinal cord damage and recovery can be achieved with physical therapy. Additional studies may be performed when we evaluate for your surgery:
Electromyography (EMG), which can detect muscle weakness due to nerve problems

Surgery to eliminate nerve compression from the front or back of the neck.
Laminectomy is performed from the back of the neck.
