One of the frequently asked questions of my patients is: Should I have a sugar loading test? Before answering this question, let's discuss why diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, called gestational diabetes, is important. During pregnancy, some hormones are secreted into the body through the baby's partner, called the placenta, and a resistance to insulin (the hormone that lowers sugar) develops in the mother's body. If this resistance is higher in some women and the intolerance to sugar progresses further, diabetes develops. How can we understand this? When the fasting blood sugar is 92 and above, and the postprandial blood sugar is 127 and above, we create an alarm and monitor that pregnant woman more closely in terms of sugar. High blood sugar can cause serious problems for mother and baby. In the baby, such as congenital organ disorders, large baby, excess fluid, birth traumas, low blood sugar in the baby, increased risk of jaundice, stillbirth, developmental delay. In the mother, kidney and eye disorders, hypoglycemia attacks, frequent urinary tract disorders. In what cases should gestational diabetes be suspected? Large baby, history of dead baby, frequent miscarriages, polycystic ovary disease, family history of diabetes, presence of sugar in urine, delayed wound healing. As you can see, gestational diabetes is a disease that causes serious problems. If early precautions are taken, we can eliminate these problems. For early prevention, it is possible with a screening test. The screening test is done by drinking 50 or 75 grams of glucose once. They say that glucose is harmful, yes it is harmful, but diabetes is much more harmful. A one-time glucose test does not cause harm. If it did harm, every mother who eats baklava and sweets would have a retarded baby. Because it contains the same amount of glucose. In the treatment, we recommend exercise and diet to our patients, but if they are diagnosed with diabetes, insulin or pill treatment is also recommended.
