People who want to get information about psychotherapy often ask the following question;
'How will talking, that is, just talking, be useful, how will it solve my problems?'
We can answer this question as follows; If what you mean by talking is talking like you talk to your family, friends and family at home, then yes, it will not be useful. But in therapy, we examine the problem through conversation, that is, communication. "How long has the problem existed, how often does it occur, how does it affect your quality of life?" What we do varies from session to session. Sometimes we will focus on how you can let go of painful thoughts or memories or free yourself from limiting beliefs. Sometimes we will look at new ways to cope with strong emotions such as fear, anger, sadness or regret. When appropriate, we will focus on getting you in touch with what is important to you, setting goals or creating an effective action plan. What we do varies depending on what problem you are experiencing, how you are progressing, and what is beneficial to you.
Is Psychotherapy Helpful?
Therapy
strong>At the beginning or in the first sessions, clients have the following thought and express it during the session:"I don't think the therapy will work for me."
This thought is quite natural. Most clients have these and similar thoughts in the first sessions. There is no definitive method in the field of mental health that will work for everyone. Mental health is not like physical health. The most common topic we heard during our training was the uniqueness of the client. Therefore, I cannot promise that this therapy model or psychotherapy will work for you. But I can tell you that this works for many people and has achieved successful results with many clients. I can also say that there are many academic studies or articles about this. All this makes us hope that the treatment will be successful for you too. However, if you get stuck in the thought that "it won't work" and don't take any steps for therapy, or if you don't continue the therapy that you started but only went to for one session, it will definitely not work. I can guarantee that it will not happen.
You often experience similar negative thoughts in your life and these thoughts negatively affect your life, right? The thought that no one loves me, the thought that everyone in the crowd sees my incompetence, the thought that I am incompetent, if I go out, something bad will happen to me. Negative thoughts such as the thought that something will happen, that I will lose control during a panic attack, that I will go crazy, that I will lose my breath... So far, negative thoughts have increased the problems even more. Do you want to do something different now?
So, so do I. Do you want to try it even though you think it won't work? After all, it's just a thought, like most things that limit your life, just a thought. It is like an example of how our thoughts affect our emotions, our emotions affect our behaviors, and our behaviors affect our lives, which we will talk about frequently during therapy. Even though the thought of 'therapy will not work' remains somewhere in your mind, if you start your therapy journey, after a while you will see that that thought has gone away on its own and you are telling others about your life and your changing perspective on problems.
