What is Channel Narrowing?

Between the vertebrae in the lumbar region of our spine, there are structures called 'discs' that allow movement and load carrying.

Between the vertebrae, discs and the vertebral bones that meet at the back, is the spinal canal, through which the spinal cord and nerves going to the legs pass.

The ligaments connecting the vertebrae and the joints between the vertebrae thicken due to calcification that occurs due to aging. With advancing age, the discs between the vertebrae lose their spongy structure and begin to contain less water. This event causes the disc height to decrease and the hardened disc to curve towards the spinal canal.

Again, the bone protrusions we call osteophytes, created by the body to restrict spinal movement, also compress the nerves. All these changes result in narrowing of the spinal canal, and this condition is called "spinal stenosis" or "stenosis".

What are the symptoms?

Stenosis. Symptoms of the disease may vary from person to person and depending on the course of the disease. The main symptoms of the disorder include pain, numbness, and loss of sensation in the waist and back area. In addition, cramps, pain, loss of strength and numbness in the legs are among the symptoms of stenosis. In the later stages of the disease, problems such as urinary incontinence and decreased sexual potency may occur. People with lumbar stenosis can find relief through movements that reduce the pressure on the area, such as leaning forward or sitting. Therefore, if people who walk for a certain period of time and complain of pain, numbness, tingling, numbness or loss of strength in their legs while walking can continue walking after sitting for a while, this is a very obvious symptom of stenosis. It can be said that the less distance a person can walk, the more the disease progresses.

HOW IS THE TREATMENT?

Narrow spinal canal disease is primarily treated with PHYSICAL THERAPY, painkillers and back pain. It is tried to be treated with injections. If the disease is not too advanced, the disease can generally be kept under control and regressed with physical therapy. In cases where these methods fail, the only option is to surgically widen the spinal canal. ktir. The purpose of surgical treatment for the narrow spinal canal causing the complaint; It aims to protect many anatomical structures and the biomechanical function (ability to carry load and move) of the lumbar spine while relieving the congestion of the spinal cord and the nerves coming from it. After the surgery, the physical therapy and rehabilitation process should begin after a period of rest determined by the doctor.
