What is Vaginismus and How is it Treated?

The most common sexual problem in women is vaginismus. It is roughly described as the vagina being so focused on contraction that it does not allow entry. It seems more appropriate to use the words spasm or contraction rather than pain. This is because vaginismus is not a condition related to your vagina. Vaginismus can be defined as the contraction of the muscles surrounding the vagina due to fear and conditioning. Due to intense contraction and resistance, women with vaginismus describe this situation as painful or terrible, and in this expectation they increase the contraction.

How is vaginismus treated?

What causes vaginismus above? It has been emphasized that what is happening is the fearful disaster scenario in the brain and the resulting vaginal contraction conditioning. For this reason, the treatment focuses on gradually eliminating fear.

  • With a few simple techniques, negative information and false beliefs are cleared from the brain and subconscious. In this way, the brain realizes that the problem is not in the vagina but in fear.

  • The second point we focus on in the treatment is conditioning, that is, preventing contraction. Treating this condition is actually as easy as treating a stiff neck; Therefore, exercises are used to overcome this issue.

  • If there are problems between couples, couple therapy is added.

  •

In fact, vaginismus consists of fear and contraction conditioning and is one of the treatable sexual dysfunctions. I feel like I can hear vaginismus clients reading this article saying, "You say it's easy, but you don't know how we feel and how scared we are." However, vaginismus therapy is completely based on overcoming these fears. During the therapy process, the client with vaginismus has all control. In the light of these principles, it can be said that vaginismus is just a frightening, empty ghost and relief begins immediately from the first week of treatment.

What are the results in vaginismus treatment?

Classical vaginismus therapies in the 1950s. It has been successfully implemented all over the world for years. Unfortunately, due to the fears of vaginismus patients, sometimes with good intentions and sometimes from a commercial perspective, methods such as 1-session therapy, membrane cutting, intercourse under anesthesia are used.

Methods such as hypnosis alone, botox etc. are also common.
