Gynecomastia - What is Feminine Breast? How to Treat?

Masculine and feminine characteristics are determined in men and women during the embryological period, that is, before birth. Accordingly, with the increase in hormones during puberty, feminine and masculine shapes appear, and thus, breast growth occurs in women under the influence of the estrogen hormone.

Although it does not have such an effect on the testosterone hormone in men, some of the men are against the breakdown products of this hormone. Due to the sensitivity that develops, feminine breast growth may occur. It is clear that these changes will occur in the early teenage years after puberty. Sometimes it can also be one-sided. It may raise suspicions in the family or in the person themselves, such as whether there is a tumor in my breast. It can be easily demonstrated through some examinations that these changes belong to feminine breast development. In addition, excessive weight gain also increases the size of the breasts. Gynecomastia may be expected to develop in older men due to changes in hormone levels.

Large breasts in young men create social problems for these people. Avoiding sports activities in front of others, not being able to undress in front of friends, and not being able to wear tight clothes are some of these problems.

How is gynecomastia treated?

The purpose of gynecomastia treatment is, of course, to reduce the size of the breasts. Nowadays, we perform breast reduction treatment surgically. In the classical method, the breast is reduced by making an incision around the nipple and removing a significant part of the breast tissue. In this procedure, it is inevitable to leave an incision scar of 5-6 cm in the lower area of the breast and it is a relatively major surgery.

The liposuction method is also used. In this method, an incision as small as 0.5 cm is made and the fat and breast tissue found there is sucked out. Moreover, it is possible to reduce the sagging-looseness that may occur in the skin by using the laser liposuction method.

What awaits the patient after the surgery?

Although no incision is made in the patient's breast area during the liposuction procedure performed on the gynecomastia area. Since it is traumatized, some edema, or swelling, is expected. For this reason, patients are advised to wear a corset in the postoperative period.

Patients can usually take a bath after 3-4 days, and they can probably return to work on these days and start sports activities after about 3 weeks.
