YOU, BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO ME: PANIC DISORDER
“Something is happening in my body, but I can't name it. More precisely, doctors cannot put it, I went to a lot of doctors and they say there is no physical problem. They said anxiety last but I still feel there is a problem they just haven't found it yet. If this continues like this, I'm going to lose my mind."
If you've ever found yourself in this or a similar situation, you may be suffering from panic disorder or anxiety disorder. You may notice compelling bodily symptoms such as a feeling of being overwhelmed, dizziness, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations, which usually appear suddenly when there is nothing. During these symptoms, scenarios may appear in your mind as if something bad will happen to you. When you think about these scenarios, you say that they have never actually happened to you before because you are simply afraid of them 'happening to you'. The primary emotion associated with this situation is anxiety. A disaster is about to happen to you and you do not know how to deal with it. At this point, we encounter two important distortions: you both overestimate the risk of danger and underestimate your own coping mechanisms.
Individuals experiencing panic attacks constantly look for a sign, thinking that there is something wrong with their body, and constantly scan their body. With this state of constant vigilance, you may be overly sensitive to your body. At this point, a strange sensation triggers panic, such as hot weather, excessive caffeine consumption, anger, excitement... For example, a breakdown in an elevator or a plane crash… All this vigilance leads us to constantly develop avoidance behaviors; such as not traveling, not taking an elevator, not going to places where we have felt bad before.
The most important point in dealing with these situations is to expand our life experiences. You miss out on a lot of life because of fears, and at some point this intensifies your feeling of badness. What can we do to continue life step by step, by trying to understand the origin of our anxieties and their presence in our lives? You will see how far you will go. If you cannot overcome this on your own, consider getting support; Why would you live your life with these feelings and avoidance behaviors? Life is flowing and we have a powerful way to change. Sometimes going off the road we know leads us to beautiful stops to explore. Living life is being on the road.
