The Relationship Between Pollen, Allergic Nose and Sinusitis

The nose is an organ that is quite complex in terms of its structure and performs many functions. In addition to the breathing function; It performs many functions that we cannot count, such as smelling, tasting, adjusting the resonance of the voice, and being a barrier to infections.

The nose is roughly; It consists of a septum in the middle compartment, nasal concha, called concha, on both side walls, and an opening to the oral cavity called choana in the back part. At the same time, the sinuses in the head area open to the nasal chambers through small gaps. These transition zones are so important that if they are blocked, recurrent headaches, postnasal drip, and frequently recurring sinus infections may occur.

One of the main causes of nasal congestion is the growths in the nasal concha. Pollen, which appears especially in the spring months, can cause serious growths in the nasal concha, called concha, in people prone to allergies. Enlargement of the turbinates can cause breathing problems by narrowing the nasal cavity and can impair the ventilation of the sinuses with its obstructive effect. In addition, allergens such as pollen etc. cause edema in the nose and sinuses, negatively affecting the ventilation of the sinuses. Naturally, it is easier for microorganisms to accumulate in airless sinuses, and this can cause frequently recurring sinusitis symptoms.

Sinusitis infection is known as a simple condition in society. On the contrary, in later cases, they can cause many dangerous conditions, including eye abscesses and inflammation of the meninges (meningitis). For this reason, it is beneficial to apply preventive methods before sinusitis occurs. Perhaps the most important of these protection methods is the protection of nasal ventilation. Recent studies have revealed that symptoms and complications are much less common in patients who receive preventive treatment before the onset of allergy symptoms. For this reason, preventive treatment should be started in susceptible individuals before the pollen season begins, and the ventilation of the nose and sinuses should be under control. Likewise, nasal bone-cartilage curvatures and obstructive nasal contusions that impair nasal ventilation should be treated with medication or surgery. Especially concentrated in the middle part of the face and forehead area. When you have sudden headaches, you should definitely consult an ENT doctor.
