Macular degeneration, known as macular degeneration in the society, ranks first among the vision losses in old age.
Although it can be partially stopped or slowed down with intraocular injection treatment in some types, it is a disease that causes progressive vision loss. . Loss of central vision is unfortunately inevitable, especially in delayed cases and treatment-resistant cases. Unfortunately, there is no other treatment option for patients in this situation. This is a condition that usually affects both eyes. In a situation where the vision in both eyes is greatly reduced, it becomes very difficult for the patient to continue his daily life. With special glasses called 'assistive visual aids', a magnifying glass effect can be used to increase vision, albeit limited.
However, it is extremely difficult to use these special glasses in daily life. The visual field of these glasses is very narrow and the patient sees as if looking through a keyhole. The adaptation rate of patients to these glasses is 10 percent.
Instead of binocular glasses, which are difficult to use, telescopic intraocular lenses have been developed with a similar logic in recent years. These are also called miniature telescopic lenses. It is a version of the telescopes used as glasses adapted to the eye. The advantage of the patient is that he or she does not experience the deprivation of peripheral vision that occurs with telescopic glasses. The patient can see both central and peripheral vision. In this system, first of all, the patient must not have had cataract surgery. Because telescopic intraocular lenses are placed into the eye after cataract surgery. After the patient's lens is removed with the phacoemulsification method, the foldable telescopic lens, which has the effect of magnifying the image, is placed seamlessly into the eye.
These lenses enlarge the existing image and move the image from the diseased vision center to a healthier retinal area. In other words, a new macular spot is created for the patient.
Apart from macular degeneration, successful results can also be obtained in some diseases that cause irreversible damage to the visual center, such as some congenital macular diseases and visual center damage due to high myopia.
