Some children have respiratory tract infections only a few times a year, while others get sick frequently and cannot get better. Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Aydan Cevriye Çankal gave important information about the reasons why children get sick frequently.
Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Aydan Cevriye Çankal said that it is normal for children to have upper respiratory tract infections 6-8 times a year. Stating that the child's immune system strengthens with the diseases and reaches its adult form, Çankal said, "However, if your child gets sick frequently and does not get over it easily, needs frequent antibiotic treatment, turns into wheezing when infected and descends to the lungs or turns into serious ear infections, we can think that there are other reasons."
Exp. Dr. Aydan Cevriye Çankal listed the most common causes of frequent upper respiratory tract infections in children as follows:
Smoking of parents
Passive smoking is the most common situation we encounter. Cigarette smoke in children; It causes upper respiratory tract infection, ear infection, asthma attacks and unexplained coughs. In addition, smoking is one of the factors that trigger allergies.
Ask Parents "Do you smoke?" When we ask, we usually get the answer "yes, I drink, but not with you". Studies show that drinking even on the balcony affects children. There are substances that permeate the smoker, the child inhales it, and the person continues to expel these substances through respiration. On the other hand, the fact that the person who smokes is a carrier of bacteria and viruses also indirectly affects children.
Allergy
Allergy in children can also cause frequent upper respiratory tract disorders. When it is determined what kind of allergens such as dust, pollen, additives, etc., the child is sensitive, precautions can be taken accordingly.
Hidden Reflux
Reflux can cause children to have frequent respiratory tract infections and get sick. Hidden reflux occurs in children due to genetic predisposition and nutritional deficiencies.
Nasal Eti
Adenoid enlargement, which is frequently encountered in children; It is manifested by middle ear inflammation, recurrent upper tract diseases, difficulty in breathing through the nose, and nasal and post-nasal drip symptoms.
Nursery Factor
The fact that the age of going to kindergarten is very young and the children are in a mass environment cause the rapid transmission and spread of respiratory tract infections. It is very important for children to acquire the habit of washing hands at an early age. We usually recommend the flu vaccine to children who go to the nursery and get sick frequently, have a lot of wheezing due to respiratory tract infections, and return to wheezing attacks. Of course, first of all, a doctor's examination is required to determine whether there is a vaccine-inhibitory condition.
Weakened Immune System
If there is no negative result in general blood and laboratory tests, the children will be treated We give some supplements to strengthen their immune systems. To families; for the children's immune system to be strong; We recommend that they take foods rich in omega, protein, vitamins A and C and stay away from ready-made foods.
