As the summer months approach, most of us can't wait for the weather to get warmer. However, excessive sweating and the health problems it brings, such as eczema and fungus, are also more common in these months. In fact, our body aims to adjust its temperature according to the external environment by sweating. When the air temperature rises or the body temperature increases due to reasons such as diseases or physical activity, we lose heat by sweating. In such cases, sweating occurs from the entire body surface, but mostly from large surfaces such as the back and chest. With puberty, a different type of sweat gland becomes active in the groin and especially in the armpits. In these areas, there is a stronger smelling and intense sweating. The purpose of sweating in these areas is the spread of scent molecules called pheromones, rather than temperature regulation. Pheromones secreted intensely in animals, especially during mating periods, attract the opposite sex. However, in relations between people, these smells do not have a positive, but on the contrary, a repulsive effect. It is necessary to wash frequently and use deodorant and perfume to get rid of sweating, which increases especially with stress and physical activity, and the odors it causes.
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is when a person sweats in amounts that exceed the purpose of temperature regulation. Although it can occur throughout the body, it most commonly occurs in the armpits, palms and soles of the feet. Sweating increases when a person is excited and under stress. Hyperhidrosis is extremely uncomfortable for the person. When it is in the armpits, it causes bad odor as well as wetting and staining of clothes. Shaking hands is a big problem for people whose hands sweat. Sweating feet causes both health problems and odor. Hyperhidrosis negatively affects the person psychologically, socially and professionally, making daily life difficult.
Excessive sweating is observed in 4 out of every 100 people. Hand and foot sweating may be hereditary. In case of excessive sweating, it is thought that there is a problem with both the sweat glands and the nerves that stimulate them. In the treatment of hyperhidrosis, it should first be investigated whether there is a systemic disease that causes the condition. Various hormonal disorders, especially thyroid diseases, can increase sweating.
