Denver 2 Developmental Screening Test

It is a measurement and evaluation tool developed to detect developmental problems in young children (0-6 years old). It is a developmental test with established reliability and validity that is used to evaluate certain age-appropriate skills of the child, to objectively measure developmentally suspicious situations, and to monitor children at risk.

Ankara standardization for Turkish children in 1980 by Prof. Dr. Kalpiye Yalaz and Prof. Dr. It was made by Shirley Epir (Hacettepe Medical Faculty) and made available for use. It was revised by Frankenburg and Dodds in 1990 and developed with new items added, especially in the field of language, and a different scoring system, and was published under the name Denver II. It is still an actively used test.

DENVER II is used to detect possible developmental problems in healthy-looking children. It is valuable in three basic areas:

a) Screening seemingly healthy children for possible problems,

b) Since there is developmental delay providing the opportunity to objectively detect suspected functions,

c) Risky babies (e.g. prenatal problems, low birth weight or premature birth, multiple pregnancies, those with developmental problems in the family, those with developmental problems, It can be used in monitoring babies born with reproductive techniques, etc..

It shows the percentage of the child in the areas it covers: PERSONAL-SOCIAL, FINE MOTOR, LANGUAGE and GROSS MOTOR, by comparing it with other children in his age group. It is easier to apply than many other developmental screening tests.

Developmental Stages:

-Fine Motor Skills: Holding and grasping in children and babies. These are skills that show whether skills such as squeezing, hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and using objects in the right place and time have been acquired at a level appropriate to their age profile.

-Gross Motor Skills: Such as jumping, walking, running and jumping. In general, it shows whether the skills that need to be acquired, such as movement ability, are acquired in accordance with the children's age development profile.

-Social-self-care Skills: It evaluates whether the child is self-sufficient, able to handle his own business, and whether he has acquired social communication skills according to his age profile.

-Language Skills: Hearing in children and babies. It is a skill that measures whether one can hear, understand, use language, produce sounds and words in appropriate rotations, in accordance with one's own developmental characteristics, and whether one can form regular and age-appropriate sentences.

Denver II Test is used in the field in the following three areas. :

1- Clinical evaluation:

In healthy children who do not show any symptoms or in children aged 0-6 with suspected symptoms. It should be used as a screening test. The test needs to be performed at regular intervals (for example, once a year). It also creates a suitable environment to give information and suggestions to parents about child development.

2- Special Education:

Diagnosed with a developmental problem. and helps to monitor the positive or negative effects of the education program by repeating the initial evaluations of children started in special education and at intervals.

3- Preschool Institutions:

It can be used to determine the skill level and development of the child starting the pre-school education institution and to direct them to the doctor/hospital in case of a possible problem. It will be useful in giving information to the family and creating the child's education program.

APPLICATION OF THE TEST:

Denver II test application, who has received the application training of this test and has an application certificate. It is implemented by people who are The test aims to measure developmental stages and takes about 15-20 minutes. The duration of the test may be longer or shorter depending on the situation.

Denver II test should be considered as a developmental test, not an intelligence test.
Developmental problems that do not show symptoms at any or more than one developmental stage in children and infants, It is applied to diagnose cases of developmental delay.

The test can be re-applied 6 months after it is applied to a child, the test should not be repeated before.

App. During the transportation, the child's parents or at least one of the parents must be present with the child.

The Denver II test is applied to detect children with developmental delays and who need special education at an early stage or to diagnose them during clinical evaluations.
