Specific learning disorder; It is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. Among the subtypes, the most common reading disorder is dyslexia. The incidence is 3-5 times higher in boys than in girls.

In the preschool period; In fact, although he seems very smart, he may not be able to learn simple things, his speech may be slower than his peers, he may have difficulty learning concepts, he may have difficulty expressing himself, he may have difficulty keeping complex instructions in mind. Confusion of time, direction and space concepts, difficulty in grouping and sorting, difficulties in learning the names of friends, difficulties in focusing and maintaining attention, and difficulties in performing daily routines on time and in order may be observed. Even though he is 5 years old, right or left hand dominance may not have developed. Common symptoms include grasping a pen, not being able to use forks, spoons, and scissors properly, not wanting to play games such as Legos or puzzles, clumsiness due to balance problems, falling frequently, difficulty playing hopscotch, and not being able to run fast enough. As a result of the problems experienced in all areas of development, the child may feel unsuccessful and inadequate and may experience social and emotional difficulties such as adaptation problems, behavioral problems, and exclusion.

Although the symptoms of dyslexia appear in the preschool period, it is diagnosed mostly in the first grade of primary school. Difficulty in learning letters, confusion, adding and subtracting letters and syllables while reading, reading backwards, reading slowly, skipping lines, reading by making up words or guessing them, reluctance to read, not understanding what you are reading, mixing left and right, reluctance to do homework, confusion day by month, going to school They may apply to us with symptoms such as reluctant attendance, difficulty establishing and maintaining friendships, lack of self-confidence, fear of making mistakes.

Dyslexia; It is not a problem related to sending the child to school early or that will go away as the child grows up.

Dyslexia is diagnosed by Child Psychiatry during childhood or adolescence, appropriate educational interventions are started, and treatment is started for other accompanying psychiatric diagnoses such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Individuals know themselves well and realize their strengths and weaknesses until adulthood. Parents have a great responsibility here, because dyslexia is a long-term disease that requires patience. It is a process. Inappropriate attitudes such as constantly warning the child, insisting on homework, criticizing, and comparing cause both the deterioration of the parent-child relationship and the negative impact on the child.
