Canal Stenosis (Waist or Neck) -Spine Curvatures -Cervical Herniation -Slipped Lumbar -Herniated Disc

Canal Stenosis (Waist or Neck)
It is the most common disease after herniated disc. It may be due to calcification that is congenital or develops due to aging. The nerves coming from our brain and going to our arms (spine in the neck area) and legs (spine in the back and waist area) pass through the canal in the middle of the spine formed by the vertebrae lined up on top of each other.

Stenosis of the cervical spinal canal; It manifests itself with numbness in the hands and legs, weakness, and gait disturbance. The patient cannot do fine manual work.

Stenosis of the lumbar spinal canal; These patients may experience numbness and pain in the legs while walking. They cannot walk long distances. They may have to rest. That's why they move less. It is usually seen in patients over middle age.

Treatment; Treatment of canal stenosis is through surgical intervention. Medication and physical therapy are insufficient.

Spine Curvatures
The spine has physiological curvatures. These are curvatures that are outside of these curvatures.

SCOLIOS; They are lateral curvatures of the spine. It is more common in childhood and adolescence. It happens for various reasons. Treatment of these diseases; It is the correction of curvature with corset, exercise and surgical intervention.

KYPHOS;(HUNPOWEDNESS); It is the forward curvature of the spine. It occurs for various reasons in every age group. It may accompany some diseases (such as Ankylosing Spondylitis). The treatment of these patients is to correct the humpback with surgical intervention.

Cervical Herniation

Cervical herniation occurs as a result of the herniation of the disc structure between the cervical vertebrae. Initially, the patient experiences pain in the arm (Brachialgia) as a result of neck pain and pressure on the nerves of the arm and hand. Cervical vertebrae are very mobile. For this reason, our neck is more mobile than our waist. Cervical disc herniation has been increasing rapidly in recent years. Especially as a result of using computers and keeping the neck in the same position for a long time, there is weakness in the neck muscles and wear of the disc between the vertebrae. As a result, patients develop neck pain and cervical disc herniation.

Treatment: Drug Treatment; It may be effective in cases where neck pain is more severe.

Physiotherapy;may be effective in patients for whom drug therapy is not effective and whose neck and arm pain is of moderate severity and weakness has not developed.

Surgical Treatment; Cervical hernias are operated on with microdiscectomy. The patient's own bone (autograft), external cadaver bone (allograft), cage or disc prosthesis (to protect neck movements) can be placed in the disc space.

Waist Slip

Waist slippage is one of the most important causes of canal stenosis. It may happen for various reasons; congenital deficiency in ossification, calcification, trauma, tumor, infection, etc. It occurs most frequently in women. When accompanied by calcification, canal narrowing occurs more frequently. It manifests itself with complaints of lower back pain, pain and numbness in the legs.

The walking distance of the patients decreases. Patients may continue to gain weight because they move less.

Treatment of slipped waist; It is surgery. Vertebrae that slide over each other are fixed with screws. The placed keniks are expected to boil. This period is approximately 12-18 months.

Disc Herniation
Disc herniation is a very common disease in society. Because we are creatures that walk on two legs, herniated discs are common in humans. The main causes of herniated disc are; There may be reasons such as weight, sedentary life, weakness of the waist and abdominal muscles, trauma, incorrect waist movements, genetics (familial).

The discs between the vertebrae reflect the body weight equally to the vertebrae. Thus, body weight is not felt at one point. Low back pain begins with the wear and tear (degeneration) of the discs between the vertebrae. It then continues with leg pain. When leg pain begins, it means there is pressure on the nerve going to the leg. Having leg pain is defined as Sciatalgia (Sciatic nerve pain). If the pressure on the nerve increases and continues, weakness in the foot (foot drop) may occur. From time to time, weakness may develop in both feet in large hernias.

The most important factors in preventing lumbar hernia are; doing sports (especially swimming, pilates), not gaining weight and making appropriate postures (such as sitting, standing, bending) a habit.

Treatment: Medication; usually at the beginning of a hernia It may be related.

Physiotherapy; It can also be applied at the beginning and when drug treatment is insufficient.

Surgical Treatment; Microdiscectomy; It is a surgical technique performed under a microscope with special retractors and a 2-3cm skin incision. It is the technique with the highest success rate today. It is performed in cases where medication and physical therapy are insufficient.
